Extend Gomateshwara Express to Mangaluru Central – Coastal Karnataka's Long-Pending Demand Deserves Immediate Attention
The demand to extend Train No. 16575/16576 Gomateshwara Express from Mangaluru Junction (MAJN) to Mangaluru Central (MAQ) has remained pending for several years. This is not a new demand, but a genuine and practical request from thousands of passengers travelling between Bengaluru and Coastal Karnataka. Mangaluru Central is the city's mainrailway station, strategically located in the heart of Mangaluru with excellent connectivity to the city's bus stand, private educational institutions, hospitals, commercial centres and other parts of the city. Extending the Gomateshwara Express to Mangaluru Central would greatly enhance passenger convenience while requiring only a short additional run beyond Mangaluru Junction.
Over the years, various reasons have been cited for not extending this train. Initially, it was stated that Mangaluru Central had only three platforms and could not accommodate another terminating train. Subsequently, additional platforms were constructed, significantly increasing the station's capacity. The next reason cited was the lack of watering facilities in the newly constructed platforms. Today, however, watering facilities are available at all platforms and the rake can also be moved to the coaching depot located within the station premises for watering and cleaning. Later, the explanation shifted to the lack of adequate stabling lines, but additional stabling lines have since been developed.
Now, the latest reason being cited is the lack of stabling availability during weekends. However, this explanation deserves a fresh review in light of the current operational scenario. Train No. 16575/16576 Gomateshwara Express operates only three days a week, while Train No. 16539/16540 Mangaluru Junction–Yesvantpur Weekly Express, which serves the same Bengaluru route on weekends, is another train that also deserves to be extended to Mangaluru Central. Furthermore, Train No. 16621/16622 Mangaluru Central–Rameswaram Express departs from Mangaluru Central on Saturday and returns only on Monday. Considering the present infrastructure and existing rake movements, the weekend stabling constraint deserves to be reassessed based on current operational realities rather than earlier assumptions. If the infrastructure limitations previously cited have already been addressed, it is only fair that the proposals to extend both Train No. 16575/16576 Gomateshwara Express and Train No. 16539/16540 Mangaluru Junction–Yesvantpur Weekly Express to Mangaluru Central be re-examined through a fresh operational feasibility study.
The people of Coastal Karnataka have always depended on rail transport for their connectivity with Bengaluru. A direct daytime train from the city's main railway station to Karnataka's capital is not an unreasonable demand but a legitimate public necessity. Mangaluru Central should not be viewed merely as a terminal for trains bound for Kerala and Tamil Nadu. It is the primary railway station of Mangaluru and should also serve the travel needs and aspirations of passengers travelling within Karnataka.
We therefore earnestly urge the officials of @GMSRailway , @DRMPalghat, in coordination with @SWRRLY , to reconsider this long-pending proposal without further delay. If the infrastructure limitations cited in the past have been addressed, the time has come to conduct a fresh operational assessment based on the existing facilities and current operational conditions. Extending Train No. 16575/16576 Gomateshwara Express and Train No. 16539/16540 Mangaluru Junction–Yesvantpur Weekly Express to Mangaluru Central would not only improve passenger convenience but also strengthen rail connectivity between Bengaluru and Coastal Karnataka while fulfilling a long-standing public demand.
Coastal Karnataka deserves equal importance in railway planning. Mangaluru Central is the city's principal railway station and the people of the region deserve direct daytime rail connectivity to Karnataka's capital from their main railway station. The time has come for Southern Railway and South Western Railway to work together and translate this long-pending public demand into reality.

ROUTE TAMBARAM-MANGALURU AMRIT BHARAT EXPRESS VIA BENGALURU
The introduction of Tambaram–Mangaluru Amrit Bharat Express is a very welcome development for Coastal Karnataka. It is encouraging to see Mangaluru getting another Amrit Bharat service, which reflects the growing importance of the region in the national railway network. Such trains are designed for the common public and are meant to improve affordable long-distance connectivity and this move is definitely appreciated by passengers across Dakshina Kannada and neighbouring districts.
However, while welcoming the train, there is a strong and genuine concern among passengers regarding its final routing. The long-term usefulness of this service will depend heavily on whether it is routed strategically to serve real demand centres. Many passengers and railway users’ groups strongly feel that the train should be operated via Katpadi – Bengaluru – Hassan – Subrahmanya Road – Mangaluru, instead of being pushed through routes that do not significantly improve connectivity for underserved regions.
For many years, railway users, passenger associations and public representatives have been consistently demanding a direct and meaningful train service between Mangaluru and Chennai via Bengaluru. This is not a new demand but a long-pending connectivity gap repeatedly highlighted in various forums. In fact, the Bengaluru alignment is geographically shorter compared to the traditional Palghat–Coimbatore routing, making it a more logical and time-efficient option if planned properly.
Routing the train via Bengaluru and Hassan will ensure that large interior belts of Karnataka get direct and affordable access to Chennai. This corridor includes students, job seekers, pilgrims and small traders who currently depend on indirect or expensive travel options. Amrit Bharat trains are intended for common passengers and aligning the route through these population centres will fully justify the purpose of introducing such a service.
This alignment will also significantly benefit Coastal Karnataka. A Bengaluru–Subrahmanya Road routing will provide another much-needed link between Bengaluru and the coastal districts, where waiting lists are already very high on existing trains. During peak seasons, festivals and pilgrimage periods, passengers face severe ticket shortages and a properly routed Amrit Bharat Express can help absorb this growing demand.
In addition, Bengaluru–Hassan–Subrahmanya corridor has strong tourism and pilgrimage potential. Kukke Subrahmanya, Dharmasthala (via road connectivity) and the Western Ghats belt attract travellers from across South India. A well-routed train can support not just passenger mobility but also the regional economy by strengthening tourism-driven travel.
From an administrative perspective as well, this routing is practical. Both Mangaluru and Chennai fall under the Southern Railway zone, which means there are no jurisdictional complications at the terminal ends. The train will naturally be operated by Southern Railway. However, since the proposed Bengaluru–Hassan stretch falls under South Western Railway, it is important that South Western Railway also considers this long-standing demand positively and facilitates the routing when formally requested. A coordinated approach between Southern Railway and South Western Railway can easily make a Mangaluru–Bengaluru–Chennai connectivity vision a reality.
There is also a broader concern among passengers that new trains should not end up as symbolic additions without meaningful connectivity benefits. In the past, certain services have been introduced without addressing core demand corridors, leading to limited public utility. A flagship initiative like Amrit Bharat deserves careful planning so that it becomes a truly impactful service rather than a missed opportunity.
We sincerely urge @RailMinIndia, @GMSRailway , @SWRRLY,@DRMPalghat sir,@DrmChennai sir to take a balanced and passenger-centric decision while finalising the operational route. A strategically routed Tambaram–Mangaluru Amrit Bharat Express can achieve high occupancy, public acceptance, and long-term success while also supporting regional connectivity goals.
This is not just about one train, but about ensuring that major railway introductions genuinely serve the people they are intended for. With proper coordination between zones and a passenger-first approach, a Mangaluru–Bengaluru–Chennai Amrit Bharat service can truly be put on the right track and deliver lasting benefits to both Coastal and Interior Karnataka.

@Chaotic_mind99 This is how anti-nationals spread their anti-India propaganda against the very country they live in.
The Leader of the Opposition in Israel clearly stated that their walkout had nothing to do with Modi, it was directed against Netanyahu’s address.
