This government has lost the right to call itself a democracy. The 2008 constitution was our first attempt at becoming a modern democracy, but the checks and balances envisioned during the drafting have been made a farce by President Muizzu. Muizzu has centralized control over the media, as activists of opposition parties are being fired from their jobs, harassed in their personal lives, and threatened into signing for the ruling party.
Maldivians are not free to speak, nor protest, nor even spend their own money. The need to build a stronger democratic structure where citizens are trusted to take part in their governance has never been more apparent.
