@BrunotPascal @ID_AA_Carmack Find a project and just do it with them. We tried the Udemy courses, and they are not good for kids. However, a joint project worked really well. Also, scratch teaches a lot of aspects visually. Helps with basics.

@antovsky @BrandonLive @Atrix256 @ID_AA_Carmack Unfortunately, rarely you find engineers that are ridiculously deep in something, but lack social skills. Several security engineers come to mind. They deserve promotions, but require specific types of managers that see their value, and don't require "politics".

@BrandonLive @antovsky @Atrix256 @ID_AA_Carmack I actually agree with almost everything you have said above. The real issue is, everything you are saying is absolutely subjective. How people perceive your value greatly changes by person. That's a problem, in my opinion.

@BrandonLive @Atrix256 @ID_AA_Carmack Note, I was reasonably well leveled and very well rewarded. So was my wife. I spent many years at multiple tech companies. Levels are not as meaningful as you believe. Levels are certainly political. Feel free to have a different opinion.

My wife definitely deserved principal before she retired, yet was shafted by a system rigged against women.

@BrandonLive @zuhayeer @ID_AA_Carmack Glad you didn’t see much of it. My wife just retired from MS in October 2019. I last left -4 years ago. Having been in every major org through our careers, I (and wife) saw it plenty. Mostly sticking up for those juniors getting shut down by the big fish.

@ID_AA_Carmack Levels are stupid. This coming from someone that has had a really great tech career. I’m an expert in X but a newb in Y. Leveling people is near impossible. I’m a firm believer we should pay for results and throw away the titles (and attitudes).

@furan @ID_AA_Carmack Agreed. Exposing levels at Microsoft was a mistake. It also created a lot of animosity. People saying “how are they that level” or “I’m better than them” (sometimes warranted).

@kelseyhightower @IMTantri I’ve had the M1 since before Christmas. If you are willing to compile things yourself, almost zero problems. Will admit I’ve compiled many of the tools I use from source though. But they run so fast.

Kids caused no sleep, Covid-times has caused major time loss (I.e day-to-day misremembering). I couldn’t imagine having a newborn with Covid-times. It would all just be one really long day for a year or 2.
