Thank you to to the European Parliament @Europarl_EN for adding its voice to calls for the Zambian Government to uphold human rights and the rule of law in #Zambia and to arrest the growing pattern of violence and intimidation against the opposition and critics of the Zambian Government.

The European Union is an important economic partner for Zambia and @EUinZambia has been strategic ally in support of the Lobito Corridor.

We further call on the @commonwealthsec to deliberate on the deteriorating situation in Zambia as the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group meets on 20th September. The rise of autocracy in the region must be condemned in the strongest terms where ever it rears its ugly head.

Today is the United Nations international day of democracy. This years theme is “when every voice counts, democracy delivers”.

As the world celebrates this important day, we must reflect on the importance of Zambia’s democracy. Following the 2021 general elections when the PF government was voted out of power, we were made to believe that Zambia was now in the champions league. The understanding, at the time, was that the champions league was a league of nations with impeccable democratic credentials espousing the rule of law, transparency, accountability and respect for human rights.

As we observe this important day, we must ask ourselves whether we are still a country that espouses the rule of law, transparency, accountability and respect of the human rights of every one including those who do not agree with us. There is no doubt that our democracy has been under significant strain in the recent past. The government and all of us as the people of Zambia, must reaffirm Zambia’s commitment to multi party democracy, the rule of law, transparency, accountability and respect for the human rights of all citizens notwithstanding whether they are members of the opposition or critics of the government.

Finally, we should praise what is praise worthy but, more importantly, we must also continue to speak truth to our leaders and offer respectful criticism because, as this years theme says ‘when every voice counts, democracy works’. Well informed criticism is more valuable to this country, than uninformed sycophancy. Happy international day of democracy!

1.2 million citizens at risk of food shortage – Govt

SECRETARY to the Cabinet Patrick Kangwa has warned that about 1.2 million people risk facing severe food shortages from October to March 2027.

Kangwa adds that energy and water utility companies must constantly monitor the country’s dam levels in order to manage power generation and spare citizens from load shedding.

My parents, Zachariah and Elizabeth commemorated their Golden Jubilee as man and wife today. They have had their ups and downs for sure, including the misfortune of burying five children and three grandchildren. Buttheir faith in God and each other has kept them going.
