During Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources Media Briefing yesterday, we made it clear that Lagos will no longer tolerate deliberate environmental abuse. From July 1, full enforcement of the ban on Single Use Plastics begins. Offenders who dump refuse illegally, litter the streets, or deface our environment will face stiff penalties, up to ₦250,000 fine or 3 months in jail.

We’ve arrested over 3,000 offenders and counting, and we’re ramping up surveillance Anne advocacy. The law on cart pushers still stands, public defecation remains banned, and illegal street trading will not be tolerated. This is about saving our environment; for us and the generations to come.

Let’s celebrate the coming Sallah with cleanliness and responsibility. Bag your waste, don’t dump in drains or medians, and hand over refuse to your assigned PSP operator.

We all have a duty to protect our Lagos. The time for change is now!

Today being Sunday, I led the management team of the ministry on a tour of Idi-Araba, Orile Iganmu, and Alaba Rago to reinforce one message; good sanitation is a shared responsibility. From illegal cart-pushing rings to traders turning medians into dumps, we saw the urgency of our work. A clean, flood-free Lagos requires collective discipline.

We are escalating enforcement against environmental infractions, especially in markets and known black spots. Traders at Alaba Rago have until tomorrow evening to clear all infractions or face full closure. The time for warnings is over. We will no longer tolerate trading on drainage setbacks or road medians.

Residents must take ownership of public infrastructure - bag waste properly, subscribe to PSP operators, and stop dumping refuse illegally. Over 100 LAWMA trucks are now supporting PSP gaps across the 377 wards, and we are increasing surveillance and cleanup operations statewide.

Let us be clear: sanitation is not seasonal, it is a lifestyle. With the resumption of monthly environmental sanitation soon, we’re bringing back the culture of cleanliness. We thank law-abiding Lagosians and call on all to rise to the challenge of building a Greater Lagos.

Earlier today, I represented the Lagos State Governor, @jidesanwoolu at the inauguration ceremony and inception meeting of the UNIDO - LASEPA Project, titled "Emergency Capacity Building of the Informal Food / Water Vendors and Waste Workers in Flood Affected Areas of Lagos to Combat Cholera Outbreaks" held at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.

While delivering the Goodwill message of Mr Governor, I noted that cholera remains a recurrent health crisis, with outbreaks occurring almost annually. This situation reflects broader global challenges such as climate change, displacement due to conflicts, and rapid urbanization without adequate infrastructure development.

Recall that in 2021 alone, Nigeria recorded over 100,000 suspected cholera cases and more than 3,500 deaths across 32 states - a stark reminder of the urgency required to address the issue.

This initiative was a timely and critical intervention aimed at strengthening the emergency capacity of informal food and water vendors, as well as waste workers, in flood-affected areas of the State. These individuals are frontline providers of essential services, yet they remain disproportionately vulnerable to cholera outbreaks due to their constant exposure to contaminated environments.

It is on this premise that the State Government through @LasepaOfficial sought technical support from UNIDO to safeguard environmental quality while addressing social and economic needs. This partnership aim to enhance emergency response capabilities for managing infectious disease outbreaks such as cholera, capacity building for informal food/water vendors as well as waste workers who play critical roles in public health and sanitation.

In order to ensure measurable impact, this initiative would focus on educating informal vendors and waste workers on cholera transmission pathways, symptoms, prevention strategies, and treatment options.

A community-based learning approach will be employed to engage local stakeholders directly in identifying risks while promoting solutions that resonate with their unique circumstances and a gender-sensitive framework will ensure equal participation from both male and female workers while addressing gender-specific vulnerabilities associated with cholera exposure.

@followlasg remain steadfastly committed to safeguarding public health through robust environmental protection policies and strategic partnerships with MDAs (Ministries Departments Agencies), international organizations like UNIDO, private sector players, NGOs—and most importantly—the people of Lagos.

I therefore, commended the General Manager LASEPA @thetundeajayi , the partners at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), for championing this laudable project as well as the Government of Japan for their invaluable support in advancing public health in Lagos. This collaboration exemplifies the power of partnerships in addressing pressing health challenges.

This morning on Sunrise Morning Show at Channels TV, I discussed Lagos State’s commitment to sustainable waste management, improved sanitation, and flood preparedness. With 13,000-14,000 tonnes of waste generated daily, we have MoUs in place to decommission dumpsites and reduce landfill dependency. However, true progress requires a culture of waste management, and while we work with PSPs for efficient collection, the government also subsidizes refuse removal. Leadership demands tough decisions, and despite politicization of actions like the ban on styrofoam, we remain focused on protecting Lagos’ future.

On sanitation, we have built 1,710 public toilets, yet open defecation persists. Through enforcement and collaboration with Ogun State, we are changing this culture—because accountability matters. Markets fall under local governments, but we oversee waste management, and we are strengthening synergy to ensure cleaner public spaces. With rains approaching, we have cleared primary and secondary drainage channels all year round, continuously monitoring water levels and issuing early warning alerts. Residents in low-lying areas must take precautions to avoid preventable loss.

Regarding water supply, Adiyan 1 and Iju waterworks remain functional despite their age, while Adiyan 2 construction is underway to increase capacity. The Lagos State Government remains proactive, making bold moves to modernize infrastructure and sustain environmental reforms. Advocacy, enforcement, and innovation remain our tools to build a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable Lagos.

On behalf of the Lagos State government, the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Lafarge Africa PLC for the collection of non-recyclable combustible waste round the state and landfill sites, a significant step towards achieving a zero waste future for Lagos State.

Through this partnership, Lafarge Africa will collect and treat non-recyclable and combustible waste from companies and Lagos State dumpsites and divert it to its Ewekoro Plant for use as an alternative fuel for production.

This landmark milestone will enable Lafarge Africa support @followlasg ’s vision of a cleaner Lagos in line with the Lagos Waste Management Authority’s ambitious zero waste to landfill objective.

This new agreement reiterates the commitment of the @jidesanwoolu led administration’s to continually reduce the quantum of waste that gets to landfills, ultimately leading to zero waste landfill sites. The state government is determined to continually pay special attention to wastes conversion in the state.

The Lagos State Government in recent past had also signed MoU to help decommission existing landfill, MoU to convert waste to energy, MoU with a Dutch company to take off electronic waste.

We are addressing the issues of waste frontally at the states; waste sorting is a culture and it is a culture that you must imbibe and build over time; separation of waste is here to stay.

The MoU's benefits are wide-ranging, including the availability of reliable alternative fuel sources, cost efficiency, regulatory compliance, and alignment with ESG goals.

The operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps @LAGESCOfficial today monitored the Agege Pen Cinema Bridge and adjacent railway track—a clear statement to our commitment to environmental sustainability.

Our dedicated teams have been actively patrolling this corridor, and we have successfully apprehended environmental offenders constituting environmental nuisance in the area.

These offenders were duly tried and have now been sentenced to community service, reinforcing our zero-tolerance policy for any actions that compromise our shared environment.

Together, we are ensuring that every corner of Lagos, including key infrastructures like Agege Pen Cinema Bridge, remains a model of sustainability and order.

The Lagos of State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) in demonstration of its commitment to sustainable environment, proper sanitation and public health safety in the State in line with EMPL 2017, on Friday 24th January, 2025, sealed off a Public Toilet at Under bridge by Leventis Bus-Stop, Apongbon for deliberate discharging of untreated sewage into the Lagoon and Illegal Construction of Public Toilet, and Ebute-Ero Market Block N, for channeling sewage pipes into public drains and construction of septic tank on walk way.

The agency also resealed Optimum Exposure Media Control Room for deliberate discharging of untreated sewage into the Lagoon and other environmental nuisance.

The Lagos State Government reiterates that the State has Zero tolerance for environmental pollution and degradation. Citizens are advised to embrace proper hygiene practices to enhance public health and environmental sustainability.

Today, I had the privilege of leading a team of state officials on an extensive tour of the Adiyan Water Works I & II. This visit reaffirmed our commitment to delivering 100 million gallons of clean, pipe-borne water daily to Lagos residents.

The tour became necessary in order to asses the level of the work done since the contractor have been mobilized.

This water project is pivotal. Governor @jidesanwoolu is determined to solve our water challenges, and we are making significant progress. The ongoing laying of 8.1km of 1600mm Diameter Ductile Iron (DI) pipes for raw water pumping mains are being laid along the stretch of the expansive Adiyan premises.

The Project Manager, representing Salini Nigeria Limited, Mr Cifola Daniele has assured the Ministry that the ongoing construction of 320,000³/day water treatment plant that will be of the World Health Organisation (WHO)
Standard.

The Water Treatment Plant project which will be closely monitored by the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources is expected to run for a period of 36months and it will definitely put an end to scarcity of pipe-borne water to various communities in Lagos State.

The goal is clear: to ensure every home in Lagos has access to safe, clean water. We are on track, and I’m confident that by 2027, we will achieve a water-safe Lagos.

During the inspection of System 6c (Cele - Ilasa) drainage channel setback and alignment at Odo - Ashimawu at Cele bus stop on Apapa Oshodi Expressway, I ordered the immediate removal of illegal markets and shanties blocking the canal. These unwholesome activities are not just about trading but also contravening structures causing environmental and safety hazards.

Activities such as trading and construction of shanties under the Cele Pedestrian bridge as well as under the bridge harbouring illegal market, Abattoir and criminals living in shanties on System  6c, Odo Ashimawu cannot continue.

The state government is not against the operation of markets but traders must operate in designated areas and must desist from erecting shanties on drainage channels, drainage set backs, kerbs, open spaces amongst others.

I, therefore, advise residents to avoid indiscrimate waste disposal and always bear in mind that climate change and global warming is real, enjoining residents to always take ownership of  infrastructures built for their benefit, and safeguard the environment.
