He sat at a wall of phones while partners using fake names - jbird, Wolfman - fired his orders from inside the sportsbooks. The second a book realized a bet was his, they stopped taking it. So he stayed invisible. Thirty years, not one losing season.
He wasn't picking teams. He priced the game better than the bookmaker did, and only bet when the line was wrong. Most of the time it wasn't, so he sat out. He waited for the number to be off, hit it hard when it was, and sized every bet the same careful way.
Everyone trading crypto does the opposite. One chart, one gut feeling, same bet size whether they've got an edge or not.
So I built the Walters version for Bitcoin - a Claude Fable 5 agent that does the waiting for me.
It reads the 5-minute candles and asks 31 small models the same question - what happens next - then counts the votes. If they argue, it sits flat. It only takes a trade when almost all of them land on the same answer, and it sizes that trade with Kelly. Some days it does nothing at all. That used to bother me, until it clicked that the sitting still is the whole point. You lose money forcing trades, not skipping them.
No magic. No "AI that prints money." Just a pile of dumb models voting, and a rule about when to listen.
I wrote the whole thing up as a notebook you can run yourself - every model, the voting logic, the Kelly sizing, backtested on real data you can poke holes in. I'd rather you try to break it than take my word for it.

His name is Bill Benter. He looked at horse racing and saw the same counting problem, just with more moving parts.
He showed up with a partner, a suitcase of cash, and a computer. Then he spent years teaching that computer to estimate one number: the true chance each horse had to win. When his number came in higher than the odds the bookies were offering, he bet. When it didn't, he did nothing.
That's the entire edge. Expected value:
EV = p · b - (1 - p)
Bet only when your win chance p, paid at odds b, is worth more than the cost of being wrong. Nothing else.
