For a decade, they called Rahul Gandhi a “dynast.”

The joke was supposed to be simple: born into power, therefore entitled to power.

But dynasts don’t usually spend years walking thousands of kilometres, standing with protesters, confronting institutions, getting detained on the streets getting thrown out of his house, FIRs fired, withstanding maligning campaigns, gruelling interrogations by authorities, having women in family called out abusively, suspended from the parliament getting dragged and shoved around on the streets and the list is still on….

Rahul Gandhi inherited a surname and a political legacy which is more a responsibility and accountability than anything else.

What he has had to earn is credibility, resistance and the willingness to stand in the line of fire.

From Kanyakumari to Srinagar. From Hathras to student protests. From Parliament to the Election Commission — the politics is increasingly being fought on the streets, not from a throne.

He may have inherited the name.
He did not inherit the right to rule.
If anything, he has chosen to inherit the responsibility to resist.

And that is a very different kind of inheritance. He has come up on his own and every bit of the success in this journey is solely his own.
He no doubt is an amalgamation of his parents and forefathers all put together, if that is a claim to legacy, THE DNA.
