Blog drop! Service work has been one of the cornerstones of my sobriety. In the early days, I committed myself: if there was an opportunity to help another alcoholic or get involved in recovery, I'd say yes. Read more on my website, https://t.co/E10nsMnSxZ

1980(ish): feathered hair, bandana belt, cheap booze. One year into drinking alcoholically—and already chasing “normal” I’d never find. The Michigan chapter of my book tells the story: https://t.co/Kl9pZFr0gv

💩 Sometimes sobriety hands you a day that feels like one long scream at the ceiling—frustrations piling up, nothing going right. But here’s the thing: if you’ve got the energy to rage about it, you’ve also got the power to flip the script. The “poop on your shoes” is just life’s messy, ridiculous side. You can let it ruin your day, or you can laugh, scrape it off, and keep walking. Sobriety gives you that choice—every single time.

📣 Shit YOU Do Sober Story Time: Meet Robert!
"My name is Robert. I am from Laurel, Montana. My sobriety date is July 8, 2013.
I struggled with meth as a teenager, all through my 20s, and into my 30s. At the age of 32, I threw in the towel (with the help of a courtroom). After a 5-year camp in a state prison, I decided to try something different, volunteer work. I started spending my spare time as a caretaker for orphaned bear cubs and mountain lions at a wildlife rehab facility. Then, one day, an infant badger showed up in a shoe box. I was in love! Helping animals was my new thing. The badger and I took over the world in our weird way.
But that wasn't enough. When they say, "The sky is the limit," I say, "Let's find out." So I did, and I took up skydiving. I currently hold a C license and a coach rating. The skydiving community is amazing. There are so many subcultures within, even a skydiving sobriety group.
Between badger cuddles and terminal velocity, I cringe at the thought of drugs and alcohol. I still struggle with simple daily chores, but who doesn't? Nobody is perfect.
I can say with complete confidence that the more distance I put between myself and my old ways of substance abuse, the better life gets.
You can do anything if you apply yourself, but DO NOT try to cuddle with a wild badger. They are dangerous and bipolar. Jumping out of airplanes is a lot safer."
🪂 Thanks Robert -- keep on flyin' high sober! I need to meet that badger one day!

This was not always the case. I'd be lying if I said I never had regrets about my kids seeing me drunk for 13 and 15 years of their lives. I wish I could say, "My kids will never see me drunk." I am not that parent. But... They can see me recover day to day. See me fight battles that I wouldn't have the power to face if I was still drinking. And witness me as I turn 58, working hard to be my best self in this second phase of life. This candle is a gift from my oldest daughter. The real gift is being fully present for my kiddos now as they begin to navigate life as adults. Sobriety is magic. (And a whole lot of worthwhile work)

Before I got sober, I thought I was a master at hiding my drinking. In reality, it was exhausting, obvious, and slowly destroying me. Here’s how far I went to cover it up:
• Bought alcohol at different stores – Morning or multiple booze runs in a day were a dead giveaway, and I didn’t want clerks thinking I had a problem. So, I’d rotate between stores to keep up appearances.
• Chomped on dehydrated garlic – I was convinced it would cover the stench of fresh or stale alcohol on my breath. If anyone asked, I’d say I’d just had Italian food and "a couple" glasses of wine.
• Filled Vitamin Water bottles with wine – Like I fooled anyone. I’d empty the bottles, refill them with the “right” colored wine, and carry them around like it was normal.
• Isolated like it was an Olympic sport – Dodged invites, sat in a dark house with the curtains drawn, and ignored the doorbell—anything to avoid being seen or questioned.
• Got sober – Turns out the easiest way to “hide” a drinking problem is to get sober. It’s far less work than hiding it, and it actually gives you your life back.
If you’ve ever played these games with yourself, you’re not alone. I’ve been there—and there’s a way out.

I just uncovered a folder from my earliest days of sobriety — pages filled with raw moments, including a “diagnosis” of alcohol use disorder/alcoholism. That was my tipping point.
Inside was the vision board I created during a week in the crisis center. It was covered in quiet dreams: reading again, baking, walking in nature, finding flowers, releasing anger and false expectations, reconnecting with my playful, authentic self.
Back then, these felt like fragile scraps of hope I could only glue together in desperation for a life I couldn’t imagine living.
And yet… here I am. Today marks 4,080 days sober. Every single vision came true. Through diligent work — and the grace of my Higher Power — I now live the life I once could only cut and paste from magazines.
Find your beam and stay on it. No matter what. ❤️

📣 Amazon Review: "Such a great book. So relatable. So well written. I had the pleasure of knowing Kellie in a recovery group, early in her sobriety. With that said, it was extra fun to read this. But I will also gladly say, she has a gift for writing. This may be one of the best sobriety books I’ve read…and I’ve read a ton." ~ Robert S.
OMG... Thank you, Robert. I love that you took the time to read my book and that we are still connected after those somewhat long ago RE days. 🌟

There she is—party girl in Bozeman, Montana. Probably 2012, two years before I slammed into my bottom. I was drunk before I even showed up (obviously). Spent the night double-fisting drinks and drunk-texting like it was a job, chasing some guy who had actual zero interest in me.
I grabbed a ride home from… someone. No clue.
Next morning, I pedaled back on my cruiser with a plastic container of wine and a Xanax in my system, hoping to piece together what the hell I did—and to ask around without actually asking.
That version of me? I’m so damn grateful I don’t live like her anymore.
No more fake laughs. No more glazed eyes and blurred nights.
Sobriety gave me my life back. And it’s the best thing I’ve ever done and continue to do every, single, day.

Nobody ever argued about whose concept of a higher power was higher—because in recovery, it's not a competition. It's personal, it's sacred, and it's yours. Whatever keeps you sober, centered, and moving forward… that's enough.

Shit You Do Sober Story Time: Meet Joel Anthony of The Sober Sessions
"My name is Joel Anthony.
I’m a father, husband, speaker, and one of millions living in recovery.
On March 23, 2016, I made a choice—to live. I was done dying in plain sight. Seizures. Blackouts. ICU visits. Rock bottom wasn’t just a moment—it was a mirror. And I finally faced it.
Detox wasn’t courage—it was desperation. Recovery wasn’t instant—it was hell before heaven. I had to rebuild from the wreckage. Relearn how to be a man. A father. A soul that could finally feel again.
I’m not a guru. I’m proof.
Proof that you can come back from anything.
If you’re early in recovery—keep swinging. If you haven’t taken that first step—do it now. You’re not too far gone. You’re not too broken.
I chose to rewrite my story. You can too.
Stay raw. Stay real. Stay relentless."

Joel, you are definitely proof. Thank you for sharing a snippet of your story!

I am not a 12 step program. I am not trying to be a recovery program. I am not a recovery coach.
I am an author. My book is a memoir - not a how-to. I just needed to clear that up this week. Thanks for following along!

There is no real point to this post related to sobriety. Besides every feed could use a doodle with a donut now and then. His name is Tater. He's a true Idaho dog.
And now I want a donut.
Do you think our pets sense the change when we get sober?

Is surrender a one-time meltdown… or a mindset you choose every damn day?
Sobriety didn’t come to me in a single dramatic moment—it came when I got tired of my own bullshit and finally let go.
Not once. Over and over.
That’s surrender. That’s freedom.

#shitidosober Read. There's a list in my own book, of activities I hoped to regain when I quit drinking. Reading was at the top of that list. Boom! Mission accomplished, here's my current read pile. What are you reading that I should know about?
