to future dreams, To him, though, one thought kept growing louder:
"If I stopped reaching out, would she even notice?"
One night after dinner, he finally said it.
"Can I be honest? I feel like I'm always the one making this happen."
The smile on her face disappeared.
He thought she would reassure him.
Instead, she got quiet.
A week later, she ended things.
Confused, he asked why.
Her answer hit him like a truck.
She said:
"I didn't leave because you wanted reassurance. I left because you made me feel guilty for saying yes."
That wasn't what he meant.
Not even close.
He wasn't angry.
He wasn't keeping score.
He just wanted to feel wanted.
But that's not what she heard.
What she heard was:
"All those dinners? That effort was a burden."
"All those weekends together? You were secretly frustrated."
"Every good memory came with an invisible bill that I didn't know I owed."
And once she saw it that way, she couldn't unsee it.
The tragedy is that neither of them was a bad person.
He wanted reciprocity.
She thought her presence already was reciprocity.
He counted invitations.
She counted the fact that she always made time.
He was measuring effort.
She was measuring choice.
Neither realized they were speaking different emotional languages.
Here's the lesson:
If you're always the one reaching out, it's okay to feel tired.
It's okay to wonder where you stand.
It's okay to want someone to choose you.
But be careful how you say it.
Because there's a huge difference between:
"I'm always the one chasing you."
And:
"I really enjoy spending time with you, and sometimes I wonder if you feel the same way."
One creates a courtroom.
The other creates a conversation.
One puts someone on trial.
The other invites them to be honest.
Before you count how many texts you've sent, how many dates you've planned, or how many times you've been the first to reach out, remember this:
People don't always show interest the same way.
Some people initiate.
Some people make time.
Some people plan.
Some people simply keep showing up.
And showing up is a choice.
If you're afraid you're the only one who cares, don't turn your fear into an accusation.
Turn it into a question.
he texts back now. We send memes. Share updates. Live our separate lives but we’re connected. Because I refused to let him disappear. Because I kept showing up even when he didn’t respond. Because I believed that somewhere under the silence he was still there. That he still mattered. Three years of one-sided texting taught me that persistence isn’t weakness. That caring when it’s not reciprocated is still caring. That sometimes people need to know they’re not forgotten.
That somebody remembers them.
That I mattered enough to check on. I’ve been struggling. Your messages were proof that I existed to someone. We met for coffee. Not to date. Just to be human together. he told me he’d tried to hurt himself. That my random texts were the only thing that made him feel seen. I had no idea. Had no idea that reaching out meant that much. We’re friends now. Real friends. Not romantic. Just two people who know that checking on someone costs nothing but means everything. I still text him.
