In Greek mythology, Sisyphus was condemned by the gods to push an enormous boulder up a hill for eternity, only for it to roll back down just before reaching the top. No matter how hard he tried, he was forced to start all over again, trapped in an endless cycle of struggle with seemingly no escape.
He became a symbol of endless suffering, futile effort, and the cruel repetition of a fate one cannot seem to overcome.
And in Albert Camus’ interpretation, the tragedy of Sisyphus lies not only in his punishment, but in his awareness of it. He knows his struggle will never end, yet he must continue.
