Twiggy on one of her daily wanderings, during which she’s been encountering wild giraffes; boding well for her future reintegration.

Rescued as an infant, Twiggy has grown up – more upwardly in size than by age, as she’s still only three years old – at our Kaluku Unit. She strides at her own rhythm; enjoying long strolls, browsing the acacia trees, and keeping a watchful eye on all the comings and goings: Twiggy is inherently nosey!

These two former Nairobi orphans made the big leap to Tsavo this year. Shujaa, our former dominant bull who loved asserting himself at the Nursery, is discovering there are bigger boys here to keep him humble. Meanwhile, Mageno is adjusting to the vast landscape after the more sheltered environment of Nairobi.

Supported by our Keepers and the other dependent orphans, both bulls are building in confidence and welcoming wild elephant interactions. It’s all part of the gradual process that will culminate in each of them leaving our care to embrace a fully independent.
