It’s a 6 to 12 month long recovery, you’re told “get ready to do this again!”, and it’s thousands of $ and one of the most painful surgeries out there. All of this is to say even if this ain’t the guy, we need to treat young people with pain with the same grace we treat anybody.

FWIW I am a 28 yr old American recovering from the same surgery for the same reason. Here are the estimated fees for my 2 part L5S1 spinal fusion. Our deductible is $4,000. This is without additional fees, including anesthesiologists, 3 months of PT, etc.

Not everyone is a candidate for it either. Your fusion only really has 1 chance to heal right, so if it doesn’t the likelihood of a life with chronic debilitating pain and disability is extremely high, whether it be due to lack of insurance coverage, medical malpractice, or luck.
