It’s kinda crazy to me that we melt sand down, clean it to 99.99999% purity, literal wizards have to draw it slowly into an ingot, we cut it, inscribe a hundred billion little on/off switches on it, and when you run electric current through it you can do basic arithmetic, which when you do enough of it can do any math on the planet, and which describes reality well enough that we can teach it the ontological meaning of words and their distance from each other on a high-dimensional space, and if you ask, it can tell you what word comes next and that apparently is powerful enough that if you do it a hundred billion times it’s the smartest thing to ever exist
oh yeah and we use this primarily for email
the most famous comment in all of C programming history. written by a developer at id Software in 1999 for Quake III Arena
one line of pointer casting, one bit shift, one subtraction and somehow you have 1/√x.
just bit manipulation, a constant, and a final newton refinement step.
the comment reads: "what the f***?"
Hackers raised the temperature of refrigerators and freezers at hundreds of French supermarkets to as high as 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit) overnight, causing fires and spoiling food, per Reuters
Here is how I think of computers
A long term linear storage system yet more random access all the time.
A set of commands that can store bits for computation and calculations that is less relevant
Blinking lights across fiber or copper. And a physical set of interrupts.
fly brain weights 30ug draws 200nW power, but with proper training, it can drive car and play video games
NVIDIA B200 has 17x denser transistors than fly brain(if they are digital), but is 2615x less energy efficient
human designed computation systems have a long way to go, big potential!
Jobs helped work backwards from the customer. He turned Apple from a tech idea into a digital consumer fashion brand with this attitude.
At scale tech should be invisible.
