This is Etsuro Sotoo.

He is the Chief Sculptor for La Sagrada Familia, the unfinished basilica that Antoni Gaudi started building in 1882.

While working as an art professor in Kyoto, Sotoo visited Barcelona in 1978 and was so awed by Sagrada Familia that he moved to Spain and hasn’t left.

When Gaudi died in 1926, only 1/4th of the structure was complete. Through the decades, dozens of architects and sculptors have tried to piece together Gaudi’s masterpiece.

Sotoo so impressed the Spanish architects rebuilding the site that he was chosen as the main sculptor over local talent (he has long been fluent in Spanish).

So determined to inhabit Gaudi’s mind, Sotoo converted to Catholicism and was baptized in the Sagrada Familia’s crypt.

For 45 years, Sotoo has worked on the most visible parts of the structure including roof ornaments and the bronze door on the Nativity Facade (the only side that Gaudi himself finished).

Over 3 million people a year visit the Sagrada Familia and see the work. These same visitors contribute $25m+ a year in donations, which fund the construction.

La Sargrada Familia should be completed in 1926, a century after Gaudi’s death.

Reflecting on how most of his life was dedicated to one project, Sotoo told Nowness in 2020: “I realized that by cutting stone, I was actually sculpting myself.”
