It's been 8 long hours since Bangladesh, a country of 170 million, has been out of communication with the rest of the world. The authorities in Bangladesh shut down the cellular network and internet service across the entire country following violent clashes between security forces and students. The students have been demanding reforms to a controversial quota system that gives advantages in job placements to family members of freedom fighters.

Thirty-two people, mostly young students, have lost their lives and the number of death is likely to increase. This disturbing video from Dhaka exemplifies the police brutality in Bangladesh. Shykh Yamin, a computer science student at the Military Institute of Science and Technology, was dragged inside a police APC from the protest. He was shot and then his body was tossed onto the road. Do you see any regard for human life in this video? Yamin was still alive when the cops tossed him onto the road; he later died from his injuries.

This was my cousin, 21-year-old Mohammad Barakat, a determined student and outspoken Palestinian. This week, while studying abroad in Hamburg, Germany - he was brutally murdered in what our family and his friends suspect is a possible hate crime.

His university friends relayed to his mother that he was shot in the head twice - execution style by another student at his university. They believe it was in response to his posts in support of Palestine.

Our family has informed me that the police are still holding his body, and are being highly uncooperative in the investigation of his death. There is also little to no news or articles about the situation, which is shocking to us considering the circumstances.

I am currently seeking more details and I will provide updates as I get them. All we want is a proper investigation. Please continue sharing this story until that happens.
