UGANDA’S AWARDS PROBLEM IS BIGGER THAN THE TROPHIES
Uganda’s creative industry is not short of talent or content. What it is short of are institutions that can sustain and validate that talent. This is most visible in the state of entertainment awards.
Every year, Uganda sees a wave of new award ceremonies. They are launched with fanfare, announce long lists of nominees, host glamorous nights, and then fade into silence. By the following year, neither the public nor the winners can point to any tangible benefit from the recognition. The problem is therefore not a lack of awards, but a lack of credibility and structure.
MUSIC AND CULTURE DESERVE INSTITUTIONS
Ugandan music continues to grow. Artists are streaming in millions, touring internationally, and gaining traction in diaspora markets from Dubai to London and Minneapolis. Digital content creators are shaping culture and influencing consumer behavior.
Yet the platforms designed to recognize this work have not kept pace. An effective award should perform three functions: validate artistic merit, create economic opportunity for the recipient, and document cultural progress. Too many local ceremonies fulfill only the ceremonial function. There is little post-event support, no transparent criteria, and no data to justify the outcomes. As a result, public trust erodes, artists disengage, and corporate sponsors withdraw.
WHY SOME AWARDS FAIL IN UGANDA
Based on experience managing talent and events between Kampala and Dubai, three recurring weaknesses undermine awards in Uganda:
1. Lack of transparent criteria
When nomination and winner selection processes are unclear, audiences assume the results are influenced. Without a published jury process or clear metrics, awards lose legitimacy regardless of intent.
1. Weak business models
Many shows depend on ticket sales and performance fees rather than long-term sponsorships, broadcast rights, or partnerships. This makes them financially unsustainable beyond one or two editions.
1. No career linkage
An award should be the beginning of a new chapter for an artist, not the end. In most cases, winners receive a trophy and no further support in media, management, branding, or bookings. Without that linkage, the award has limited impact on a career.
WHAT NEEDS TO CHANGE
The industry does not need more award shows. It needs better-designed ones.
First, separate public participation from professional adjudication. Public voting can drive engagement, but a credible jury with published criteria must provide oversight and explanation.
Second, awards must be treated as year-round programs rather than one-night events. Winners should receive media training, business mentorship, and access to markets.
Third, Ugandan awards must think beyond national borders. The consumption of Ugandan music and content is now regional and global. Platforms that connect local talent to the diaspora and to commercial partners will be the ones that endure.
Initiatives such as The Showing Awards, launched in 2024 to recognize excellence in digital media, music, content creation, and youth leadership, were conceived with this broader mandate. The focus is not only on recognition, but on how that recognition translates into opportunity for creators in Uganda and abroad.
CONCLUSION
A trophy, on its own, is symbolic. Its value comes from the system behind it. Until Uganda builds awards with clear standards, sustainable funding, and direct links to career growth, we will continue to celebrate talent without retaining it.
Uganda’s music and entertainment sector does not need another trophy. It needs institutions that make the trophy matter.
