The artifact I’m sharing here is an original, 3,500-year-old linen sheet from Egypt’s New Kingdom period that has survived to the present day.

Take a look at the close-up texture detail in the second photo. You can clearly see the sheer, fine grid structure created by the threads. To achieve this quality--which the Egyptians called "royal linen"--weavers harvested and spun the flax plants while they were still very young.

When fully unfolded, the fabric becomes a massive piece, over five meters long and roughly one and a half meters wide. Yet, despite its size, it weighs just 140 grams. This is exactly the type of material used to create the draped garments frequently seen in Ancient Egyptian depictions--garments that revealed the body’s contours and skin tone beneath.

Now, let’s look at the white-painted wooden chest and the surrounding fabrics in the third image. Archaeologists discovered this chest placed in the tomb of Hatnefer, the mother of the court official Senenmut, along with linens bearing marks indicating a connection to the royal storehouses. While most grave goods were produced specifically for the afterlife as symbolic items, a specific note in The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s records clarifies this linen’s role in daily life: "...The sheet was mended and laundered in antiquity..." People didn’t merely keep it as a ritual object.

They used it actively--mending it when it wore out and cleaning it when it got dirty.

Professional launderers would carry these delicate fabrics to the water’s edge. Instead of soap, they preferred alkaline mineral salts like natron--the same substance used to dry out bodies during mummification--as a cleaning agent. Natron could rapidly dissolve dirt and grease. Workers had to stand in the water for hours, beating the fabrics against stones to clean them. However, the truly scary part of the job was the working environment. The famous Middle Kingdom text, The Satire of the Trades, explicitly describes the launderer as a "neighbor of crocodiles."

Associated with the royal storehouses, this fabric was repeatedly used, washed, dried, and finally placed inside a wooden chest, allowing it to survive to this day.
