New research reveals a significant regional difference in how permafrost responds to climate change. While warming is causing alpine permafrost to lose its ability to absorb carbon, Arctic soil is actually showing an increased capacity for carbon capture.

In alpine regions, drying soil weakens CO2 absorption. However, in the Arctic, wetter conditions and denser vegetation support more carbon storage, partially offsetting the losses from higher altitudes. Despite this offset, small increases in powerful gases like methane and nitrous oxide remind us of the fragile state of these ecosystems.

The health of our climate depends on the stability of the soil. Understanding these regional trade-offs is crucial for protecting the vast carbon stocks held within our frozen landscapes.
