Those who think situation of Kannada & Kannadigas is bad in Bengaluru tdy, should sit with older generation & hear stories of 70’s & 80’s Bengaluru.
There was no Kannada in sight beyond borders of Chamarajapete.
Kannada films were never released even in theatres in & around KR market, forget MG Road or Cantonment area.
When we used to arrive in Majestic train station , coolies were only Tamils from Okalipuram & surrounding areas.
First word anyone heard upon arrival was Vanakkam Saar.
Even till late 90’s, Many theatres in KG Road never used to release Kannada movies.
Sagar, Menaka, Tribhuvan & hosts of others were only for Bollywood & Telugu movies.
Everything changed at turn of century.
IT boom ensured North Karnataka folks turned towards Bengaluru than traditional migration to Mumbai. Same with Coastal Karnataka.
Honestly, Bengaluru of today is more ಕನ್ನಡಮಯಿ than ever before.
So I feel the sense of victimhood we see now is really misplaced & more political in nature than genuine activism that fuelled something like Gokak Chaluvali.
