With all these star hunting trade rumors going around today, I want to make clear my stance is #KEEPTHECORE. Over the past 2 seasons since the trade deadline we have learned 2 things:

1. Last season when LeBron got hurt after the Mavs game it was our DEPTH and multiple good mid-level contracts (D’Lo, AR, Rui, Vando) that kept us afloat. In the playoffs we saw the positives of having multiple mid-level players because of their ability to go off any given night. Rui and AR balled out in the Memphis series while D’Lo and AR and Vando balled out in the GSW series. If we trade for a star like we did with Westbrook, there is no guarantee it will gel together, but there is a guarantee we have no depth and identity outside of the Big 3.

2. This season it has shown that star power only gets you so far. Getting a star like Trae Young for the young core would give us a similar roster construction to Phoenix. Even when they are healthy (and that’s never a given) you see that they can’t close 4th quarters because their stars are gassed from playing the whole game. Having AR, D’Lo, Spencer, and Gabe gives LeBron the ability to defer in the beginning parts of the game and take over late. What we need is a new coach, not a new roster. Through last year’s playoffs and the In-Season Tournament this core has proven it has what it takes. Imagine what our record would be if Vando was healthy this year. It wouldn’t even be a discussion. Last year the current Lakers record would be good enough for the 4th seed, this year it’s 9th. That’s just the way it goes. We can’t panic and recreate the Westbrook trade. That trade should have sent the Lakers back years but the Austin Reaves undrafted signing and the Wolves, Jazz, and Wizards giving up on Rui, Vando, and D’Lo saved this franchise. We got lucky and with LeBron’s age and AD’s heavy workload we need more $10M-$18M rotational players, not 3 superstars and no support. Get a new quality coach and watch us work.
