ICAR-Indian Grassland and Fodder Research Institute, Jhansi organized a Training-cum-Awareness Workshop on “IPR in Agricultural Innovation and Their Management” on March 27, 2026, sponsored by the Council of Science and Technology, Uttar Pradesh. The programme aimed to enhance awareness and capacity building in agricultural IPR. Over 140 participants, including scientists, research scholars, students, and technical officers, attended the program. Dr. Pankaj Kaushal, Director & Chairman, emphasized the role of IPR in protecting innovations. The Guests, Dr. Ashwini Siwal and Dr. R. A. Sharma shared insights on patents, breeders’ and farmers’ rights, and innovation opportunities.

A group of 20 officials from Agriculture Department, Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh visited ICAR-IGFRI: Centre for Indian Himalayan Grasslands, Palampur, Himachal Pradesh for a day training programme on Millets and Fodder Production.
This training programme included thematic lectures on Fodder crops, Millets and Grassland Management, which was followed by a field visit at the Centre.

On the occasion of Foundation Day celebration of ICAR-IGFRI, Jhansi, the regional centre - CIHG, Palampur organised Kisan Mela cum Technology Exhibition. The occasion was graced by Dr SK Yadav, Director CSIR-IHBT Palampur as the Chief Guest, Dr Sudesh Radotra ex OIC of the centre and Smt Reena Devi, Pradhan, Jogindernagar Mandi as Guests of Honour. Dr Rakesh Ahuja Asst. professor of Veterinary College Palampur delivered a talk on livestock management. A total of 45 scheduled caste farmers from Jogindernagr District Mandi attended the event, which were demonstrated with seeds of various fodder crops and drudgery reducing tools. The event was followed by a field visit for the farmers where farmers learnt practical aspects of fodder production and utilisation.

Dr. ML Jat, Hon'ble Secretary, DARE, Govt. of India & Director General, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi; along with Hon'ble Deputy Director General (Crop Science)- Dr. DK Yadava, visited ICAR-IGFRI, Jhansi to chair the launching ceremony of the 'Centre of Excellence for Research on Bioenergy Grasses', and to lay the foundation stone of the 'Advanced Plant Phenomics Facility' under the IGFRI-Reliance Industries Ltd. (RIL) collaborative project. At the outset, the Director, IGFRI, Dr Pankaj Kaushal welcomed the dignitaries and briefed about the institute's achievements highlighting forage varietal development, production techniques, grassland rejuvenation and different aspects of forage conservation, mechanisation and utilisation, and also informed the remarkable contribution of institute in form of bringing down the nation's green fodder deficit to 11%. Followed by this, Dr Shahid Ahmad, PI of the IGFRI-Reliance collaborative project, apprised the objectives and importance of the project and informed that the project would contribute by utilizing perennial grasses to revolutionise sustainable bioenergy production under challenging environments. The officials of RIL, Mr Manish Roorkiwal- Head, Energy Plantation and Mr Vamsi Jastri- Senior Vice-President, Energy Plantation, have also joined the dias and expressed the gratitude for joining hands with IGFRI and informed about the significance of the collaboration by advancing forage research and utilising grasses for bioenergy purposes. In continuation, DDG (CS), in his address, applauded the efforts of the institute in developing various fodder technologies which contributed immensely in the development of the country's livestock sector. Hon'ble DG, in his concluding remarks, appreciated the activities and achievements of the institute and commended the efforts of fulfilling the livelihood of millions of farmers. Along with this, he also emphasized the demand-driven, transdisciplinary and creative research efforts for furthering the prosperity of India and it's farming community.

ICAR-IGFRI Centre for Indian Himalayan Grasslands Palampur participated in the three day Exhibition at Dharamshala 'Destination Himachal @ 2025: The Mega Exhibition on AATMA NIRBHAR BHARAT & Government Schemes and Achievements, ongoing during 2-4 July, 2025. Hon'ble Governor of Himachal Pradesh, Shri Shiv Pratap Shukla, Dr Rajeev Baradwaj, Hon'ble Member of Lok Sabha, Kangra along with other dignitaries visited exhibition stall of the centre and interacted with the team, led by Dr Sheeraz Saleem Bhat, regarding fodder crops and Grasslands.
Besides, farmers, students and other stakeholders visited the stall and interacted on different aspects of Grasslands and Fodder Research.

Dr. Avijit Ghosh, Scientist (Soil Science), IGFRI, Jhansi has been selected as Top Agri-Food Pioneer by the World Food Prize Foundation, Iowa, USA.

He got this honour in acknowledgement of his work on soil functionality in degraded ecosystems which has provided the scientific foundation for an emerging soil carbon economy worth billions of dollars globally.

Dr. Ghosh’s research goes beyond traditional soil fertility metrics to develop a comprehensive framework for assessing soil’s role in supporting ecosystem services. His team has successfully restored community pasturelands in Indian states, using native grasses and sustainable management systems.

More significantly, his quantification of soil organic carbon dynamics and development of advanced measurement techniques using carbon isotope analysis have become essential tools for validating carbon credit programs worldwide.

His innovations extend to practical applications: developing polymer-coated, controlled-release fertilizers for resource-poor environments, pioneering the use of waste mica as potassium fertilizer, and creating rice residue management techniques that reduce phosphorus fertilizer needs by 15%.

His research has resulted in several novel microbes registered in the global NCBI database and over 70 international publications, earning him prestigious accolades including the Japan International Award for Young Agricultural Researchers.

Air India flight AI171 crash incident: 1) The flight departed from Ahmedabad for London Gatwick at 1338 hrs, was carrying 242 passengers and crew members on board the Boeing 787-8 aircraft.

2) Of these, 169 are Indian nationals, 53 are British nationals, 1 Canadian national and 7 Portuguese nationals.

3) PM Modi spoke to HM Amit Shah and Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu. He has asked them to go to Ahmedabad and ensure all possible assistance.

4) Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA), Ahmedabad, is currently not operational. All flight operations are temporarily suspended until further notice.

A one-day Awareness cum Training Programme on 'Millets: cultivation and Promotion for Sustainable Livestock Production' was organised by the IGFRI Palampur Centre in collaboration with Career Point University under SCSP at Hamirpur. The 100 attendee farmers were distributed with the millet seeds and minor implements for demonstration. The event was Chaired by Dr PL Gautam, Hon'ble Pro-Chancellor of the Career Point University as Chief Guest and Padma Shri Nek Ram (Millet man of Himachal Pradesh) and Dr Sanjeev Sharma, Hon'ble Vice Chancellor of the university as Guest of honour.

IGFRI, RRS, Srinagar organised an Awareness cum Training Programme under Scheduled Caste Sub Plan at Kotli Charken Bishna Jammu. The participants of the program got awareness about the improved fodder production and utilisation practices. Besides, attendees are also given with the agricultural inputs including vermi compost for helping them to adopt sustainable nutrient management.

Regional Fodder Station,Shuhama Srinagar and ICAR-IGFRI Regional Research Station Srinagar, collaboratively organized one day Awareness cum Training programme on Cultivation of Temperate Forage Crops at Dangerpora Chadoora District Budgam. During the event, 60 progressive livestock farmers participated and benefited through training and demonstrations.
Dr. Sheeraz Saleem Bhat, Senior Scientist & Incharge along with scientists, Dr Nazim Hamid Mir and Dr Atufa Regu from ICAR IGFRI RRS Srinagar and Sh. Ashish Kumar Verma, Farm Assistant, Regional Fodder Station, Shuhama Ganderbal highlighted the mandate of the stations, cultivation of forage crops in the temperate region and fodder management for enhanced livestock productivity.
During the event, 60 seed kits of orchard grass, tall fescue grass and rye grass were distributed. These crops are multicut and the former two persist for many years.
The participating farmers expressed their appreciation for the programme and emphasized the need for more such initiatives in the region.
