The year was 1987. Meerut was witnessing the usual sequence of Hindu Muslim riots. As a kid it was a weekend routine for me to go play cricket with friends in meerut university. At around 10 clock as we wrapped up the news of city burning through riots reached us and luckily my friend’s father an army major sent army soldiers to rescue us in an army truck.
The same evening I heard from my uncle Poet Bharat Bhushan that one of his friend #BashirBadr who lived in Meerut then escaped while his house was torched. This poem by him was written after that tragic experience. He never returned to Meerut again and left for Bhopal where he died yesterday.
God bless his soul. His writing is exceptional among other great Urdu poets of his time. From what I know about him was a wonderful human being too. Sad that he lost his memory in his last years but could still light up as he remembered his verses.
As Indians we can not term all western opinion wrong or adverse as racism. This seems the most common instinct on X right now. It’s clear to see it’s also the least effective.
We have issues that need reputational rework. Sanitation, civic sense, enhancing technological prowess, not living on past laurels, stop the harping on “Vishwaguru”, face realities and build the new india.
It’s time for voices long suppressed by the nationalistic agenda to bring out the reason and bring back common sense.
@DiscourseDancer He had an Indian soul. Nothing else matters. Such deep lover of Urdu. Throws to the bin all the limited ideas of skin and race. The best of the Indian we had.

Iconic movie, reminds me of the Delhi of the 1980s, wide open roads, hardly any traffic, fresh air, blue sky, community flats, clean and a lot of fun in the air - a must watch if you have somehow missed this gem
