It was 1992 I think. We were reasonably well off but not rich. However, Money was tight as parents were saving up to buy a house.

One Sunday afternoon dad wasn’t home, We had an Encyclopedia saleswoman visit. 10 volumes of the most gorgeous books I had ever seen. Love at first sight. She mentioned the price and It was 2000 rupees I think. That was gonna be a no from mum. But the saleswomen said let me leave you one edition and come back tomorrow and if you guys still don’t want it I will take it back.

I don’t think I left the side of that book all day. Dad comes back and mom provides him an update. He asks me if it is a good book. I say yes. Mom protests that the book is very expensive.

Next Friday I come back from school to all the 10 volumes at home. That evening dad tells me, quietly, that there are no expensive books. Just good or bad ones. I still think of that moment and the way he said it.

Anyway my point is….the Sensex crossed 3000 for the first time that year and if my father had invested the ₹2000 in the stock market instead…….
