Two things Indian startup ecosystem is missing BIG TIME, or BlGLY as Monsieur Trump would like to say
1) revenue obsession and growth obsession, and this is very very different from product, tech, product depth, tech, moat, revenue obsession is just a pure different sport and I had clue of this type of DNA from my time living in US and listening to 20VC podcast, but seeing it up close in SF has been both an exciting and humbling experience. The irony is we do have loads of raw revenue/ growth talent in India, but founder/ ecosystem ability to find/ trust/ deploy/ incentivise them is low.
2) just long time horizon following up and observing. This is way bigger than #1. Everyone in SF/ valley/ startup/ VC/ big tech has known each other, followed, observed each other for years, decades, institutions have been around, selecting people, training people, and rarely is first failure considered failure but more as precursor to next success, so one thing, I think, Indian ecosystem must invest in, is long time horizon founder/ talent/ mapping observing relationships.
A VC could be the next CRO
CRO could be next customer
Customer could be next PM
PM could be next founder
Founder could be next researcher
Researcher might be next intern
Intern might be next LP
LP might be next Head of marketing
And so on. It’s a massively interconnected world of talent moving leveraging growing building
Orgs and talent and community and nation moves grows fails together.
When we crack this together code in India, we will crack immense success.
Almost everyone who has spent a decent amount of time in this space has left blackpilled af.
Don't think its only an India thing though. Its a feature of humanity at this point - people want education to increase their future earnings. No one really goes for learning.
Perhaps the most damaging idea in all of modern business and middlebrow philosophy is Maslow's Pyramid. You know the one that puts "roti, kapda, makaan" at the bottom and "morality, creativity, meaning" at the top.
The problem isn't in the existence of those needs. It is that they are arranged in a strict hierarchy. That a "higher" need is felt only when the ones below it are met.
The idea has persisted from ancient Greece and India, through the feudal and colonial ages, down to the era of the "global south". Let us aristocrats worry about art and beauty, you just focus on surviving the winter.
Unfortunately this silly notion does not survive the barest contact with reality. Everybody has all these needs, simultaneously. The poor have as much capacity to be affected by the plight of wild animals or feel wonder at the sight of a soaring rocket. Love, self-esteem, morality - these are the things that make us human, not what emerges once you ascend from serfdom.
The condescending framework not only leads to nonsense like this - "how can India invest in a space program when there isn't enough food?", "how can a poor country focus on tigers when its people live in slums?" - but also business decisions that backfire spectacularly.
If you go back a decade when the internet first reached our unwashed masses, the first business plans were all a version of "provide soil information to farmers so they plan crops better". Guess what the farmer first did when he got online? Memes and short videos.
The need for entertainment is universal. The need to share with friends is universal. The need to be seen as cool is universal. Because Maslow's needs are not a pyramid - they're a circle.

Develop a very strong opinion about yourself.
Know exactly who you are & who you are not.
If you don't, random people will try to tell you who you are, and you might just start believing them.
Young men need to stop feeling like they're behind in life. When Julius Caesar was in his thirties, he was reading about Alexander the Great and began to cry. His friends asked him what was wrong. He said: “Do you not think it is matter for sorrow that while Alexander, at my age, was already king of so many peoples, I have as yet achieved no brilliant success?” Alexander had built an empire from Greece to India and died at 32. Caesar was older and had done nothing worth remembering. In his forties, he conquered Gaul. At 50, he crossed the Rubicon and took Rome. He became the most famous Roman who ever lived. Caesar thought he was behind, but he was only getting started. You are not late.
Peter Thiel on how you should think about your future:
"What you end up doing when you think of the future as indefinite is you pick a job that you think will look good on your resume, because it will lead to a different job later on.
