Human Brain Contusions Contain Pathogenic Transmissible Species that Induce Progressive Cognitive Decline and Tau Pathology in Mice https://t.co/mJny5H3JOm
Evidence-based treatment options for PTSD and post-concussion symptoms in intimate partner violence survivors are limited. @shultz_sandy’s team at @VIUniversity is testing psilocybin-assisted therapy, which is showing promise.

Today we walk 🧡
At least 66 women have been killed in Australia in 2024 allegedly by male violence.
This violence is preventable. A different future is possible but we need an acceleration of efforts across the spectrum of prevention, early intervention, responses & recovery.

Spitz et al. study long-term survivors of moderate-severe TBI, and show that elevated plasma levels of biomarkers related to neuronal damage are associated with white matter microstructure disruption on MRI and disordered cognition. https://t.co/DFD5meGDr6
Exclusive: Concussion risk in sport is well known, but research finds it is likely more common for victims of intimate partner violence. | @theheraldsun#IPV#concussion@STMneurosci@shultz_sandy

New papers from lab on IPV #TBI.
@MujunSun developed a new model to study how a non-fatal strangulation can exacerbate the effects of concussion. @GeorgiaSymons led the first study into blood biomarkers and symptoms acutely after IPV TBI. @BrainBehavImm

What is happening in the brain longer-term after you hit your head (TBI/concussion)? Spitz and colleagues @Brain1878 walk us through plasma biomarkers and clinical neuropsychological outcomes in a fascinating new paper.
https://t.co/sQuSBFw0X6
Key Points:
- We are becoming more and more concerned about concussion and whether blood biomarkers can be diagnostic and prognostic.
- We need more data on long-term neuropathological processes after TBI.
- The authors suggest that studying biomarkers in the chronic phase is 'vital.'
- They focus on plasma biomarkers following TBI and zoom in on amyloid and tau PET, white matter microarchitecture, brain age and cognitive changes.
- 90 folks with TBI in study.
- Plasma UCH-L1 levels 67% higher.
- P-tau181 27% higher.
- Amyloid and tau PET normal.
Higher P-tau181, UCH-L1, GFAP and NfL = worse white matter microstructure.
- There were some changes in memory/cognitive measures.
My take: The authors opine that collectively the findings MAY represent 'ongoing neuropathology' following a single moderate–severe TBI. Really great to read about the use of plasma biomarkers, imaging and clinical tests over time. My hope is that more groups will perform similar experiments, collect clinical outcomes and when appropriate collect post-mortem brains. The picture is complex, and it is interesting to think about what is happening in the brain longer-term following a concussion.

The NSW coercive control legislation comes into effect today. @DV_NSW anticipate it will lead to more people contacting specialist services for support. It is absolutely critical frontline services receive additional funding to ensure that everyone victim-survivor seeking support receives a response that meets their safety needs.

Thank you to @wtuohy for such a comprehensive article on our study released today, & to @hayleyboxall1 & @voccvic for their comments on our findings.
Our study found that in 71% of the 235 cases of intimate partner femicide examined the male perpetrator had contact with at least 2 points of the criminal justice system prior to committing lethal violence.

Great article by @catherineordway & @GingerGorman calling for sport organisations & clubs to do more to address violence against women. They emphasise the importance of education & recommend codes implement the “no fault, stand down” rule similar to NRL.
