The conversation is unrelated to Kuma having an exceptional supporting role, because do you, as a reader, truly need hundreds of chapters of foreshadowing and countless self-sacrificial heroic deeds to sincerely engage with a character?
Comments are proving my point and it’s sad, why be so obtuse about a character who was first known to us under the name “child soldier”? Many people including me started speculating she was a victim of grooming from the moment she was introduced in the manga
Brook found out there was a 00.01% chance Shuri was actually innocent and immediately put his and his crew’s life on the life for her…. How can you not say that’s true love

Of course the two characters have different roles and timelines. But it is disappointing to see Shuri's writing and development get wilfully ignored by the fans, when male characters with similar traits weren't met with the same disdain and bad faith.
@QUNDERTWO A decade of exposition wasn't needed for her story to be beautiful and compelling. My point is that she doesn't get enough recognition because she is a female character in a story with a misogynistic audience, & because the fans are incapable of understanding what they're reading
@starrksoul She doesn't need to be a 1-to-1 copy of Kuma to share traits with him, to be a significant and loveable character. I was specifically talking about the fandom making bad faith assumptions about her and minimizing her importance
@s0n_et_1umiere There is definitely a pattern of half-blood celestials (Shamrock comes to mind as well), I'm comparing her to Kuma here because both were good natured people coerced into serving the evil that destroyed their life and murdering thousands. Bonney has no blood on her hands
@glebbelots Have a cool design, personality, abilities? Have narrative significance and an intense emotional connection to a main character? Be a tragic victim of the World Government's evils? She is very easy to love
@therlkings I have zero bone to pick with Kuma as a character but it’s really insane that the good faith readings are only ever afforded to men in patriarchal roles (cough Senor Pink)
@therlkings Please I am so tired... Like I'm not the first person to be rooting for her to be a nuanced and morally grey character (which Kuma and other beloved male characters also are lmfao)
