Asked a client: “if you woke up tomorrow with a magic wand that could fix all of your problems, what would be the first change you notice”
Client: “well, I’d have a magic wand!”
A year ago, Melinda Verga displayed such a high degree of charisma, uniqueness, nerve & talent. That the season became her playground. The other queens? Her fans. The judges? Her toys. The world? Her Verga..
I first heard Sophie’s music when I was still living in Baltimore. This was before I moved to New York City, where I would later play a show with her for the first time. I wouldn’t meet her until a week later at another show in Dallas, where I grew up. Being the three most important places to me, it felt like fate that she would make such an impression in all of them.
I knew her as a squiggly wave form, came to know her as a performer, and then was welcomed into her world as a friend. In all her forms, her power drew people in.
The “Love Me Off Earth” demo was made six years ago. I left the session feeling unsure about my contribution. The next day I woke up to a video of Sophie dancing and texting me “It’s ecstasy!”
She charmed the world to bend around her. She made me feel like anything was possible.
There’s been an empty space in my life since my friend left.
As we all adjust to getting to know her as she is now, this album is a gift and a reminder to look towards the future, as she always had.
Thank you Thora & M for your beautiful words.
Thank you Benny and Emily and everyone who carefully and thoughtfully brought this together.
Thank you Sophie forever.
SOPHIE album is stellar, brutal, heartwrenching, incredible yes and also yes it still isnt the same as if SOPHIE were here. It’s as if her absence on the album is a musical element alone
