”Chemmani in the International Spotlight”

The 582 sets of human remains identified at the Chemmani mass grave in Jaffna have today become a leading story in major international media.

India Today, The Telegraph, Al Jazeera and Outlook have all reported the figure prominently. Their coverage highlights that the remains include those of babies and young children. More than 160 personal belongings - a milk bottle, a blue school bag, toys, bangles, footwear and shoes -have been recovered. One skeleton was found headless, with both hands bound against the chest.

This is not merely a number.

It is the story of Tamil civilians who disappeared during the military occupation of Jaffna in the 1990s. A truth first spoken by a soldier in 1998, buried for decades, has now forced its way back into global attention.

International outlets describe Chemmani as Sri Lanka’s largest mass grave. Yet identification, DNA testing and accountability have still not begun in any meaningful way. Trust in domestic processes remains low. That is why families continue to demand international supervision.

Every time the count of skeletons rises, the world looks.

Truth and justice, however, are still waiting.
