Why am I telling you this story? Listen closely. The heavier the GSM, the thicker and more premium the shirt usually feels.

Avoid jeans with high polyester content. The more cotton, the better they'll age and feel.

The description usually tells the truth.

Here's how I shop:

1. Read the material composition before anything else.

2. Sort by Most Orders or Best Selling, not cheapest.

3. Only buy products with lots of reviews or pictures or even better when a Nigerian has purchased it before they always tell the truth.

4. Read the 1-star reviews first. They'll tell you what the seller won't.

5. Look at customer photos, not the product photos.

6. Check the weight of the product. Better quality clothing is often heavier.

7. Read the size chart. Don't assume your Nigerian size matches.

8. If the title has words like "luxury," "premium," or "designer" but the material is 100% polyester, not everything but still move on.

Your best friend isn't the product picture.

It's the material, the reviews, and the customer photos.

That's how you separate the gems from the junk.

Update On Tax Payment Today

Nigeria’s tax law isn’t “coming soon” anymore, it’s live and being enforced right now. June 2026 brought fresh implementation guidelines telling employers and payroll teams exactly how to apply the new rules in real time. If your salary alert changed recently, this is why.

Old tax liabilities from before January 2026 weren’t cancelled, they carry forward. Every new payroll run uses the new bands. And the system is moving to digital enforcement: if money enters your account, if you use a fintech app, if you sell or receive payment online, your activity is now visible to the tax net. A TIN linked to your BVN and NIN is becoming the standard requirement everywhere.

Who must pay:

Employees: tax deducted automatically by your employer through PAYE, every month.
Employers: legally responsible for calculating and remitting it correctly, or the company faces penalties.
Civil servants: no special exemption, same PAYE rules as private sector.
Freelancers, content creators, traders, small business owners: you file and pay yourself.
Anyone earning N800k or less a year: zero tax, regardless of category.

The brackets:

First N800,000: 0%
N800,001 to N2,200,000: 15%
N2,200,001 to N9,000,000: 18%
N9,000,001 to N13,000,000: 21%
N13,000,001 to N25,000,000: 23%
Above N25,000,000: 25%

Each band only taxes the slice inside it, never your whole income.

Case 1: Minimum wage earner. N70,000/month, N840,000/year. Chargeable: N40,000. Tax: N40,000 x 15% = N6,000 for the year. Monthly tax: N500.

Case 2: Civil servant, mid-level. N300,000/month, N3,600,000/year. Pays N600,000 rent. Rent relief: 20% of N600,000 = N120,000 (under the N500,000 cap, so fully allowed). Chargeable income: N3,600,000 minus N120,000 minus N800,000 = N2,680,000. First N1,400,000 at 15% = N210,000. Remaining N480,000 at 18% = N86,400. Total tax: N296,400/year, about N24,700/month.

Case 3: Private employee, higher salary. N9,000,000/year, no rent relief claimed. Chargeable: N8,200,000. First N1,400,000 at 15% = N210,000. Remaining N6,800,000 at 18% = N1,224,000. Total tax: N1,434,000/year, about N119,500/month.

Case 4: Self-employed freelancer. N2,500,000/year from foreign and local gigs combined, files personally. Chargeable: N1,700,000. First N1,400,000 at 15% = N210,000. Remaining N300,000 at 18% = N54,000. Total tax owed: N264,000/year, paid directly, nobody deducts it for you.

Case 5: Small business owner. Turnover N40,000,000, fixed assets N80,000,000. Both fall under the small business ceiling (N50m turnover, N250m fixed assets), so zero company tax, zero capital gains tax, zero development levy. The owner still personally pays tax on whatever salary or profit they draw, same formula as Case 4.

The pattern never changes: take total annual income, subtract reliefs, subtract the N800,000 free band, then tax what’s left band by band. Learn that formula once and you can check your own payslip forever.

Know your number. Get your TIN sorted. Compliance is cheaper than penalties.

​We’ve all experienced it. You walk into a police station in Nigeria, and the officer at the gate or counter barks the standard order: "Hey! Drop your phone under the tree / inside that plastic basket before you enter!"

​Most of us comply out of fear, but have you ever stopped to ask: What is the legality of this practice? Let’s break down the law so you know your rights the next time you visit a station.

​1. The Legal Truth: Can they stop you from bringing your phone inside?
​Yes, technically they can. Under Section 4 of the Police Act 2020, the police have the administrative power to maintain security and order within their facilities.

A police station is a sensitive security zone. To prevent unauthorized recording of operational areas or protecting the privacy of suspects in cells, they have the right to say, "You cannot bring a recording device into this office."

​2. Where the Police Enter a Legal Minefield
​While they can restrict the phone from entering, how they handle your device is where they routinely break the law. There is a massive legal difference between a security restriction and arbitrary seizure.

​No Forced Seizure: If you choose not to enter, they cannot forcefully take your phone from you.

​The Constitutional Right to Privacy: Section 37 of the 1999 Constitution guarantees your right to privacy. Your smartphone contains your bank details, private WhatsApp chats, and personal data.

​No Unwarranted Searches: An officer at the counter has zero legal right to demand that you unlock your phone or scroll through your private messages just because you walked into the station.

To search your phone, they need a valid search warrant or a direct link to an active criminal investigation.

​The Duty of Care: If the police take your phone at the gate, they become legally responsible for it. Forcing you to drop a N500,000 smartphone in an unmonitored plastic basket or "under a tree" is a gross act of negligence.

If that phone is lost, damaged, or accessed by a third party, the police can be sued for damages.

​3. The Courts are Clamping Down!
​If you think the police can get away with this forever, think again. Human rights lawyers including high-profile cases handled by the likes of Barrister Deji Adeyanju in Abuja have repeatedly dragged security agencies to court over the unlawful seizure and searching of citizens' phones.

​The courts have consistently ruled that the arbitrary seizure of a citizen’s mobile phone at a checkpoint or station gate is illegal, unconstitutional, null, and void. The police have been ordered to pay millions in damages to citizens for these exact violations.

​Know Your Rights: What Should You Do?
​The next time you need to visit a police station to make a report or visit a loved one, protect yourself and your data:
​Leave it Outside:

The safest legal move is to leave your phone locked out of sight in your vehicle, or hand it to a trusted friend or companion to hold outside the station perimeter.

​Never Unlock Your Phone: If an officer insists on holding your phone at the counter, never unlock it for them.
​Know the Boundary:

They can refuse to let the phone enter the building, but they cannot confiscate it or snoop through your life without a warrant.

​Knowledge is power. Don't let compliance turn into the surrender of your constitutional rights!
