BREAKING: Keir Starmer announces he will stand down as PM after days of intense pressure from Labour MPs, kicking off process of UK installing 7th leader in decade.
"The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election.
"I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question, and I accept that answer with good grace.
"Every decision I have taken has been about putting the country I love first, that is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party."
No one should be celebrating what seems certain to be the imminent departure of #Starmer & arrival of our 7th PM in 10 years
Something has gone horribly wrong in British politics. Stability & competence were key parts of what made us a great country.
Poorer quality politicians, the cheapening of political debate (in part social media but also MSM) & rise of so called populism led to #Brexit & the decision to leave #EU just exacerbated the demise of competent Govt, sensible politics & decent politicians.
The problem with the UK is we have an electorate that wants a Japanese approach to immigration, Nordic welfare, an American tax system and a political class that would rather pander to this delusion as opposed to levelling with public about the necessary trade offs. This approach will continue to produce failed leaders until it fundamentally changes.
I know we’re mostly inured to Donald Trump’s disregard for institutional norms and proprieties, but pre-announcing the resignation of the prime minister of America’s supposedly most important ally is pretty extreme, even by his standards. UK ministers are genuinely and understandably shocked
Keir Starmer is preparing to set out a timetable for his departure from No 10 this week after Andy Burnham’s triumphant return to Westminster in the Makerfield byelection.

The Times's weekend read:
'Send in the digger, get him out the bunker.' Keir Starmer weighs up his future as Cabinet ministers turn on him
* Starmer held a series of meetings with ministers on Friday to 'make the case' for his Premiership. He said that private polling showed he could beat Burnham in a leadership contest. He said that Burnham had yet to prove himself
* He warned that a leadership contest would tear the party apart. He said he is delivering - on NHS waiting lists, small boat crossings, legal migration, inflation
* It didn't go down well. Cabinet ministers said they felt like he was reading from a speech. Some - like Heidi Alexander and Yvette Cooper - told him explicitly that his time was up
* Johnny Reynolds, the chief whip, said that there was a growing sentiment on the backbenches that he needed to set ou a timeline for his departure
* On any reading the Makerfield by-election result is emphatic. There is a strong argument given the nature of the seat that Andy Burnham should not have won. This is prime Reform territory
* Burnham, however, increased Labour's share of the vote by 10 points, taking the majority to 10,000. The swing from Reform on May 7 to Labour was *23 points*, as per @LukeTryl
* The tally of MPs calling for Starmer to go has already hit 100 and growing. As per @PronouncedAlva Burnham will present Starmer with a list of 200+ 'nominations' when they meet early next week
* For all the pressure some are urging Starmer to fight on. They say he has more agency than people think. They point to the fact that he has amassed a £100,000 warchest to fight a contest, has office space, key staff and a leadership website ready to go
* Starmer's allies are using Burnham's popularity against him. If there is a contest they point out that Labour rules will limit his ability to campaign in the election for the Greater Manchester mayorality
* There is anger on both sides. Burnham allies are bewildered by Starmer's behaviour. 'Send in the digger, get him out of the bunker,' one minister said. A Cabinet minister said they were concerned that Starmer would have to be 'dragged out by his fingernails'

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni fired back after Trump doubled down on his attacks, telling him that his “constant, unprovoked attacks are senseless” and rejecting his claims about her popularity and Italy’s military cooperation with the United States. “Italy remains a sovereign nation,” Meloni wrote, before ending with a pointed message to Trump: “My popularity is none of your concern. I suggest you focus on yours.”
💥MAKERFIELD: Andy Burnham storms to victory, winning bigger vote share than Reform + Restore & achieving - h/t @LukeTryl - a 23pt swing from Reform to Lab since May local elections. 9,000 majority arms Burnham with proof he can beat Reform & revive Labour’s fortunes. Seismic.

It was terrible Mr Vice President what happened. And lessons will be learned. But here’s a thought - maybe concentrate instead on why 44000 Americans died last year from gun related deaths, and what can be done about your dreadful disease before you start lecturing others
