A beacon of hope for trauma care in Pakistan, the Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Institute of Trauma (SMBBIT) in Karachi, established by the Government of Sindh, continues to provide world-class emergency and trauma services with modern facilities and 24/7 critical care. As Pakistan’s first Level-I Trauma Center, the institute has treated over 2 million patients, reflecting its vital role in saving lives and providing immediate medical assistance.

The institute has handled 1,357,659 emergency cases, conducted 111,379 surgical procedures, facilitated 950,161 OPD visits, and recorded 279,540 hospital admissions. In addition, SMBBIT has provided 1,094,935 X-ray services, performed 201,058 CT scans and 3,275 MRI scans, while its laboratories have delivered 4,319,886 diagnostic tests to support accurate and timely treatment.

My approach is always about sharing and learning. I was invited for training session on Livelihood Issues, the Role of GRM, and the Importance of Stakeholder Engagement to the Solid Waste Emergency and Efficiency Project’s staff, including PIU, consultants, and contractors. It was an amazing experience to learn about SWEEP’s work and to have the opportunity to guide the team on strengthening their processes and documentation.
