@vikkiog27@mexzydavid@Nuel006 Yes, yes, I’ve already read all of that, and I still disagree. You disagree with me too, which is exactly why this discussion is going nowhere.
Dembele, for example. Or fine, let’s forget about PSG and take Olise instead. Why didn’t he deserve a top 5 finish? He had a fantastic World Cup, a fantastic club season, and he plays in the same league as the winner. Did Messi have a good World Cup? Yes. Did other players have great World Cups too? Also yes. So what makes him more deserving than them? They also had excellent club seasons, playing in leagues that, in my opinion, are far more competitive and relevant to the Ballon d’Or than MLS. If you’re only here to argue because you’re a Messi fan and I support Real Madrid, and you assume I’m criticizing Messi for that reason, then we’re wasting our time. This was never about Messi. It’s about the Ballon d’Or, its questionable voting system, and how this award has been losing credibility for years.
@donblesso_tsar@U_Me_United@Nuel006 Exactly. I turn a blind eye to MLS because I don’t consider it relevant when it comes to competing for the Ballon d’Or.
@FcbTonyfcb@Nuel006 LOL, your comment about MLS alone is enough for me to end this debate. I can see I’m dealing with a Messi fan, so there’s really no point in continuing this conversation. You're not being objective.
Because there’s a separate award for the best player at the World Cup, which, let me remind you, he didn’t win. The Ballon d’Or is awarded for an entire season, and you can’t judge a player solely on his World Cup performance. A great World Cup performance can only increase your chances of winning if you’ve already had an outstanding season. At least, that’s how it should work if the voting weren’t based on exactly what I’ve already pointed out.
I think PR can have a small influence on a journalist’s decision on who to vote for, as we saw last season when Raphinha was unfairly robbed of the ranking he deserved. But ultimately, it comes down to personal preference. And that’s exactly my problem with this award. Too often, it feels like “I like you, so I’ll vote for you” rather than judging players purely on their performances.
@PaspaulinB@Nuel006 Okay, but do you genuinely think Fabian Ruiz, for example, didn’t deserve to finish ahead of Messi? Or is his name just not big enough for journalists to care?
It’s not like PR has no influence at all. If it didn’t, Raphinha wouldn’t have been so disgracefully robbed in last season’s rankings. Barca’s own PR destroyed his chances of finishing higher, which he absolutely deserved. After the season he had, he should’ve finished second, right behind Dembele.
Are you seriously trying to tell me that Cannavaro’s impact that season is comparable to Messi’s this season? I have nothing but respect for Messi’s incredible career, but we’re talking about the 2025/26 season here. I simply don’t believe PSG players deserved to finish below him. And just like I believe Raphinha was robbed last season, Yamal should never have finished ahead of him.
@KwameMorphis@Kelvin451145 Listen, you can express your opinion without insulting people. Try learning that. It’s not like Kane is your family member. And Kane would’ve played too if he’d had the chance to boost his stats like that. Don’t fucking kid me.
@mexzydavid@Nuel006 We’re not talking about Messi’s overall career here. We’re talking about the specific season this award is supposed to be based on.
