Editor's Commentary: It has been over a hundred years since the discovery of EEG by Hans Berger. While EEG is widely used in the diagnosis and management of epilepsy, it is increasingly being studied in other brain disorders, which often involves advanced EEG analyses such as phase-amplitude coupling, time-frequency analyses, microstates, task-based activities, analyses of connectivity and source localization. In this volume of Clinical Neurophysiology, Formica et al. reported a systematic review of high-density EEG in neurological disorders. Based on 89 articles, the authors concluded that EEG is effective as a diagnostic and prognostic marker in several neurological disorders, particularly in dementia. We can expect further studies of EEG as diagnostic and prognostic markers in neurological and psychiatric disorders, and wider adoption in clinical practice in the near future.
