The most endangered wild canid on Earth doesn't live in a remote jungle or a distant country. It lives in five counties in North Carolina, and right now there are somewhere between 28 and 31 of them.

The red wolf once ranged across the entire southeastern United States, from Pennsylvania to Florida and west to Texas. It was declared extinct in the wild in 1980 after a century of predator control programs and habitat loss.

14 individuals were captured and used to start a captive breeding program. In 1987, the first red wolves were released onto the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge in Dare County. It was the first time a species declared extinct in the wild had been reintroduced to its former range in North America.

By 2010 the wild population had reached roughly 130 animals across the five-county recovery area. Then gunshot mortality spiked, management decisions went poorly, and the number fell off a cliff. By early 2025 only 16 known wild red wolves remained.

The 2025 breeding season was the best in years. Four wild litters were born, 20 pups total, and the population estimate climbed to somewhere between 28 and 31. It's a fragile recovery. Vehicle collisions, illegal shootings, and hybridization with coyotes remain constant threats. The captive population of roughly 280 animals in facilities across the country is the backstop.

The Alligator River refuge is about four hours from Raleigh. The wolves are there, documented, breeding.
