Thrilled to share that I’m taking on a new role with the @LATimes as Sacramento bureau chief, overseeing coverage of California politics and the state Capitol with a sharp editor and a terrific team of reporters.
Michael Gerson, Post columnist and Bush speechwriter on 9/11, dies at 58. Such a lovely writer and brilliant thinker. He was one of the syndicated columnists we ran most often when I was editor page editor at the SacBee. https://t.co/rop3NEw8Ij
“(Jail) is the worst place to be for a person who has #SMI,” said @LisaDaileyTAC. “The longer that a person spends in untreated psychosis the harder it is for them to return to the same level of functioning once they’re receiving treatment again.” https://t.co/LgszlvSBeG
Excellent article, describing absurd, destructive limitations on “involuntary” mental health holds throughout the country, generally limited to 72 hours (if that), which is never enough time to stabilize, treat. . .
"The law allows hospitalizations for up to 72 hours. The problem is that these so-called involuntary holds often fall far short of the goal of treating patients so they can safely return to home," said our founding executive director Mary Zdanowicz.

This is a national emergency, and needs to be addressed as such. . .which includes IMMEDIATE medical intervention — not the long, criminally negligent waits described in this excellent, wrenching article…
It's that a whopping 69% of voters have backed Measure A, which would empower the L.A. County Board of Supervisors to remove an elected sheriff from office.
For this, I’m sure Villanueva has a list of people to blame. But he should just look in the mirror.https://t.co/ZNluryZ5KV
Every time we get a new batch of results fom the Nov. 8, it becomes clearer just how badly Sheriff Alex Villanueva underestimated the people of Los Angeles County.
And, as I write in my latest column, it's not just that he's trailing opponent Robert Luna.

Seems like yesterday but I'm glad the SacBee endorsed Prop 36 when I was deputy editorial page editor. "Proposition 36 would sand down some of the law's rough edges and ensure that it is applied equally across all 58 counties, but leave the law's strong heart in place."
Might help to look at the @LATimes' front page -- instead of the food section. For months, lots of great reporting in the runup to the election by a whole team of excellent journalists.
