A state that amplifies toxic masculinity, uses brute force to silence differences, targets citizens based on religion or ethnicity, will embolden violence.
We are in deep trouble, celebrating our past civilisation will not save us.
There are no shortcuts. Forget reaching Mars, women and girls can’t take a stroll in the park.

The response the Tejpal judgement has generated from the elite circles in Delhi gives weight to the claims that preserving their little club is paramount to them. Even if it involves arguing for a convicted rapist or blaming the survivor.

It is one of the reasons behind the gradual alienation of the circle. The feeling that no matter what, the members would be protected and the membership would be fixed (for mostly upper caste men), even if it involves going against all the principles that you espouse.

JNU’s application form for event bookings provides just a single line for the organisers to provide an event description. In the form appended, the applicants wrote—entirely accurately, as the event poster confirms— “Public Talk for Adivasi Divas (book discussion)’. The form does not ask for additional details such as list of speakers or the title of the book. Nor was this information sought as a precondition for the granting of permission. Against this backdrop, two facts stand out in the university’s tweet.

First, the mediocre thugs running JNU are so eager to please their leaders that they tag @narendramodi, @AmitShah et al in this ridiculous announcement advertising their mala fide decision to cancel a duly approved event.

In social media etiquette, you tag folks for whom your message is actually intended. So with this tweet JNU’s administrators (and its awful VC) are not trying to burnish their “democratic” credentials with the wider public. They’re simply telling their bosses that they are sorry for having green-lit an event that would have highlighted the scholarship of one of JNU’s most illustrious students—a young man the BJP has demonised for over a decade in pursuit of its pro-corporate, communal and anti-people politics—and that they have now made amends.

Second, the Sanghis at the helm of JNU are so cowardly —like Sanghis everywhere—that they don’t even have the courage to openly admit they canceled this event because it is about Umar Khalid’s book.

The decline of public universities like JNU and DU is not without a reason. It has been an open secret for years that appointments are promotions are being unfairly carried out. The repercussions are here to stay for decades, strategically dismantling the academic space.
