If I write a letter to my wife of several years, she could consider the letter easy to understand and “black/white”, because beyond the letter, we have spent time together and she can properly interpret my use of words, idioms and my other semantic idiosyncrasies.

Anyone else who picks the letter should proceed with caution, the person would be a secondary audience and should not assume understanding in black and white.

This thinking must guard our relationship with the bible, the books of the bible were not written to us - we are far away secondary audiences, reading of things circa 2000 years old. To assume it clear in “black and white” is to fall into several errors of interpretation. This however doesn’t make the Bible impossible to understand, it makes it complex to understand and we must respect the complexity. We must endeavour to do the hard work of trying to sit where the primary audiences sat and to understand what they understood, this is real work!
