Ask me to name my top 10 obstacles to reaching your health and fitness goals 2 years ago, and "Significant others/Partners" would not have been on my list.
It shouldn't be so surprising to me, but it is. Wanting your partner to feel their best. Live their healthiest life. Live as long as they possibly can should be paramount. But why isn't it?
Insecurity? Ego? Or is it just easier to manage their long list of medications.
Is it a need for validation, to have impact? Is that love?
"You don't need extreme circumstances to bring out the best in you."
Let those words resonate with you. Let them sink in.
What does it mean?
If a loved one was in the hospital right now, how many hours of sleep would you lose to be by their side?
If taking off of work wasn't an option, would you race over to the hospital as soon as you got off? Get there before your shift?
If you were told that if you didn't make a change in your physical health by the next 2 months, would you then take the step forward?
It doesn't have to always be all or nothing. You are capable of so much and would gladly expend 100% of your energy in an extreme circumstance. So how about setting aside 20% of that to your physical well being, for now and the future?
No one should ever WANT to stand in the way of your health. Part of your fitness journey is going to force you to set boundaries with the people around you. We can't get hung up on the fact that it "shouldn't" be this way. It just simply is.
It's an important step in taking yourself seriously. It's an important step to understanding who is on your side and who isn't.
Try this -
Tell someone you are counting your calories and gauge their response.
Tell someone you can't eat something they have purchased.
Tell someone how important this is to you.
You don't have to remove the people who don't understand, or even the ones who refuse to. But it will help you understand who to share your success and struggles with, and who you shouldn't.
It's time for you to tell the truth. You can lie to me, but I won't let you lie to yourself. For one reason or another you find yourself in a negative mental, physical or emotional state in regards to your appearance and health. Let me tell you why YOU have to be the one to do it.
Think about that dreadful feeling, and the energy you put into hiding it. Now think about the people around you who also won't tell you the truth.
We live in a world of well intentioned enablers and insecure deterrents.
Those who will protect your feelings, and those who will take any chance they get to shut down the steps you take in the right direction. This is why it has to be you. It's near impossible to find someone who will tell you the truth or cheer you on. Most importantly, those people can't eat the food for you, or lift the weights for you. They can't be the power and energy you summon on the days that you just don't want to do it. But you can do it. Somewhere you know that, and that 'welling up' feeling you get when you think about it, is the power trying to work its way out. You just have to let it.
@BurlyMonk I love this list. It truly boils it down to the most essential 10. Anyone who sees or reads this post should automatically want to get up and just get it!
How long until I lose the weight? How long until I get buff and muscular? Why don't I look like the absolute BEST version of myself yet.
Beyond a shadow of a doubt the Number One obstacle that anyone and everyone faces on their Fitness Journey is Managing their expectations.
Not the food, the time or the exercise. Those obstacles only exist because the root is your expectations.
We ask how long it will take, not how long are we willing to push. We give up early because the guarantee of fast weight loss, or "grow X body part" doesn't net the results we expect. We try to wrap it all up in a tight and neat time restricted package.
Manage your expectations. An effective timeline exists, but you have to be willing to accept it, accept yourself as you are, and accept the amount of effort required. Be realistic and then try to over achieve. Out perform the timeline. It is a Journey after all.
"If you aren't spending it here. You're spending it somewhere else." - Z. Berry (Personal Trainer).
Money for the gym or for training. Time in the gym or exercising. Energy to work on yourself.
I hear it every day from strangers, friends and family.
"I don't have time to work out." "The training package is too expensive." "I'm just too tired".
Are these statements really true?
Do you work 7 days a week 12 hours a day?
Do you spend your money on Star Bucks, Fast Food, Media subscriptions?
Are you unable to get out of bed and move your body?
Or is it that you underprioritize your health?
That instant gratification is worth more than dedication and results?
Or that you are afraid you will fail, look weird or consider it a waste of time.
Accountability time. At least just tell yourself the truth. Tell your friends and family the truth. Listen to the truth. Take yourself seriously and start paying back your DEBT.
People with self discipline donβt have more willpower. β¨β¨They figure out how to alter their environment ahead of time to make it easy for them later. β¨β¨So itβs not about βresistingβ the cookies right now. β¨β¨Itβs about removing them from sight two days ago.
With New Years around the corner. It's likely you might consider joining a gym. Which is GREAT!! Here are 5 simple things you should do if you want to be successful. (Yes we are doing lists.)
1. Have specific goals in mind and build a plan to achieve them. (Avoid resolution remorse!)
2. Dial your nutrition in (Make your gym time matter)
3. Avoid your comfort zone (Don't just hit the treadmill)
4. Prioritize the Gym (Don't place it at the bottom)
5. Stay consistent (Get your money's worth)
6. Hire a personal trainer! (Cover all of the above!)
If all of this is intimidating or difficult, then consider hiring a personal trainer, in person or remote. Silver Bullet Fitness has you covered!
Listen to your body. Consider the messages it sends to you. The complex nature of people. The complexity of YOU. Is it trying to warn you? The small pains and aches, the fatigue or emotional imbalance. Or is it always just telling you to STOP and Rest?
Consider this. Not every inconvenience of the body requires a full stop. Maybe your body is telling you to TAKE ACTION. Take steps to cure it from weakness and fatigue. It's giving you the chance to do something different. To change your default from, "I cant." to "I will".
Ask yourself this one question. Can I do it now?
Human Resilience. A gift and a curse. We possess such a strong ability to endure discomfort, dissatisfaction, and even pain. We can even turn these things into a badge of honor for ourselves. But for how long? That nagging soreness, or disappointment isn't going to magically go away. How amplified will it be 1 Year from now? 5 Years?
Will that pre-existing injury or illness just improve? Will it help or hinder you in the coming years?
Life is short.
And if life is short, then moving quickly matters. Launch the product. Write the book. Ask the question. Take the chance.
Be thoughtful, but get moving.
