Ahh, now I see what you mean. I think you might actually be hitting a Windows/Dot limitation rather than an SSH configuration problem.
I went digging and found an open OpenAI bug report about Dot-created Windows tasks blocking SSH even when the user's actual SSH setup works.

Might be worth checking whether your Dot is actually getting access to Windows OpenSSH or whether the sandbox is blocking it. Also make sure you've granted local computer access to the Dot itself, since that's separate from just connecting SSH in the app.
My setup is a little different since I'm doing the orchestration through Hermes on my VPS, which runs SSH directly.
But yeah, I agree with Nathan. Native Dot access to remote machines without all this extra bullshit would be nice lol.
Oh yeah, I've gone down so many rabbit holes it's not even funny anymore hahah. I'm always finding something new I didn't know before. And it's been going on for lil over a year since I had my first oh shit moment with it. It was enough to make me sign up and haven't been without since. Now I juggle many models/subs. Lmao does it ever end? Hmmm
Lol, I see that.
What I hate about Samsung is the locked down bootloader.
Sure I could get a unlocked phone in that sense but I don't feel like I'd get as good use as I do with my fold.
But having those 24/7 agents is nice too.
I may of missed it what models do you use? How does your setup look like?
To be fair my dude, while I have used ssh in the past for shit, it's a.i. that has brought me last where I use to be.
I use ssh for fucking everything, and I do mean everything. I've gotten pretty use to the terminal now compared to where I was a year ago, when I use to dick around with this stuff back then and would hit road blocks. AI just keeps leveling me up and up. I got all my computer boxes and vps connected to one each other using auto login methods so a password is never needed. Then I get tailscale involved on each one so I never get further connection issues, ip changes or anything. Hell I asked my hosting provider for ssh access to my shared and reseller account and now I got opencode and other harnesses installed on those with ai doing work locally, or all from my vps using hermes under telegram. Then I got dots doing even more shit for me. Including dealing with my mom's windows 10 PC and ssh working there. I call it AI Webworking. Because it's a interconnected chaotic but organized web flow with how I work. If you ever want some help or guidance maybe I could offer it? Haha idk.
@DaneDe4orest I'm using x now equally if not more then reddit. The only difference is this account isn't 10 years old lol. I originally never cared for Twitter then I didn't care for x but now that I'm last the idc phase, I kinda like it.
@byron_miller Mine genuinely does use SSH, so I wouldn’t write it off yet. But I should clarify my setup because we might be talking about two different connection paths.
I have a computer connected to dot for executing tasks. From that computer, it uses configured SSH connections to reach my VPS and other machines over Tailscale/shared & reseller accounts. It’s been doing actual website deployments, database work and server configuration for me. I verify the results on the machines and websites themselves.
You’re describing a saved SSH connection inside the OpenAI app. Having that show connected doesn’t necessarily tell us whether your dot has been given a usable task environment for that particular host. That’s the part I’d have it check before accepting “I can’t use SSH” as the answer.
Try asking it:
“Inspect the computers and registered remote environments actually available to you. My SSH host shows connected in the app. Check whether that host is available and authorized for a task. If it is, start a read-only task there and report the hostname and current directory. If it isn’t, explain the exact missing access or connection step based on what you can inspect. Don’t change settings or ask me to repeat setup without identifying what’s missing.”
Which desktop OS are you using, and where exactly did you add the SSH connection? A screenshot with the private details covered would help narrow it down.
And to the ‘another L’ reply: I’m literally using this setup. 😂 There are definitely bugs and rough edges, but helping someone identify which part failed is more useful than declaring the whole thing useless.
After thinking about it, if doubling the allowance on chatgpt pro makes the five-hour limits generous enough that I barely encounter them, I can see the appeal. I still prefer having no short-term restriction, but I'm not opposed to getting more usage. So from this "low context user" I get the idea and math behind it. It's just I came from plus and got a pro and have been enjoying the freedom it came with. Don't have to babysit a five hour window to see if I'm pushing it or not.
@meghrajai I want to work as long as I fucking want to. Some days will be short some days will be long. I still manage my usage through the days. But there are times I will burn it. But for the most part I get a lot of use out of it and it's nice not being five hour limited.
I agree sure. But tbh I get a lot of satisfaction from being able to SSH into my stuff. Think about it you got a lot of headless computers for ex. Like linux or headless windows, no gui at all. Which are what all mine are but the main PC which is a Linux with gnome desktop. It's quite the nice setup if you get use to it. And with ai it makes the whole damn thing so much better.
Nope not at all. I thought IG would be good since it was recommended for my business. Are they really against AI posting marketing stuff for you? I mean it was posting stuff for my website services such as computer repair and website service/work. Did I do this stuff hitting their tos? Ah well. But three weeks and no results and getting locked out sucked anyways.
