Hard governance lesson in all this:
Legitimacy is an asset in itself.
Like neutrality, it’s slow to build and easy to erode.
The test isn’t whether those exercising power have good intentions (or what they believe are good intentions). It’s whether the same actions would be considered legitimate regardless of who was exercising it!
Imagine the exact same situation, the exact same actions but a different person/org doing all this. (veil of ignorance test)
If that changes whether the arrangement feels acceptable then the legitimacy is borrowed from the individual.
Decentralisation changes the distribution of power. It doesn’t magically change how humans relate to power.
Outcome = Technology × Human Nature
Integrity is one of the key (and scarcest) resources in web3 - principles are easy when they cost nothing. The real test is whether they survive proximity to power…
Tech basically compounds human nature. Without integrity and principles that remain intact when proximity to power makes them inconvenient, we are just rebuilding the same old.
Huge thanks to @Sim_Pop, the PG working group and all the ENS community members who took the time to talk to us. The support and encouragement we got from all of you is a big part of what keeps us shipping. ❤️ 2/2.
We are sad to see ENS shutting down its public goods grants, but also incredibly thankful that Vyper was able to benefit from it last year.
The grant allowed us to improve the compiler, start work on formal verification and unlock matching funding from @ethereumfndn. 1/2
@vyperlang So happy we could support you! Language diversity is incredibly important and I am thankful we were able to deploy the resources available. This is what I think the work is all about - enabling access to resource so we’re able to build this ecosystem in a meaningful way.

@BrantlyMillegan@ethidorg Sigh…
As I said personally also, this is sad. When core people leave something it’s because trust has been broken and a deep disillusionment sets in. I’ve been there and it’s not the way we should be building.

The @ENS_DAO Public Goods Working Group has been sunsetted after 4.5 years of existence.
Was it perfect? Hell no! But in that time we funded open source compilers, developer tooling, privacy tooling, builder incubators, education programs, policy and ICANN research and builders at all stages of development, across six continents.
Here’s a tl;dr thread of what we did🧵

People naturally extend legitimacy surplus/deference to founders because of past contributions, reputation, perceived alignment etc etc. so we must be mindful of this (but it’s also understandable this would happen)

Is ENS DAO Dead?
Nick Johnson is using his voting power to hand ENS's treasury to a Foundation.
@nicksdjohnson and ENS delegate @alextnetto, who says the plan "marks the downfall of ENS," discuss live.
@blockchainjames joins right after.

@lucianodeangeIo@LefterisJP@ENS_DAO It was fantastic to support it especially with you guys involving the local government into it and them testing out one of the winners for a pilot!
“I think life is just made of highs and lows, that's how it defines you.”
Our paths are not straight forward, we have challenges, frustration, disillusionment, and then (maybe) a clearer sense of purpose. The journey doesn’t just test our skills, it reshapes our judgment.
Another great conversation for @_humanprotocol, exploring personal insights from the people who have gotten us to this place. The pendulum takes wild swings but it does settle and it is that balance that shapes who we are and how we build.
Thank you @pedrouid for joining me and concentrating chats we've had over the years in this hour full of lessons learnt, truths about where we are and where we're going.

New HP episode - @pedrouid@WalletConnect chats about the beginnings, protecting the core, why leadership is a feedback sport and how good leaders create feedback loops, not echo chambers and why hype distorts product decisions.
So many good insights in this conversation, especially around founders often overestimating their own certainty and how leadership gets better when you separate ego from decision-making.
The goal is not to be right, it’s to make the product and team stronger...
