@scottbobberry@PMalinauskasMP The wind still blows at night, batteries are getting bigger and better, we don’t actually use much power while everyone’s asleep. The boffins are well aware that the sun doesn’t shine at nigh and are still confident we can be 100% renewables by 2027 in SA.
@scottbobberry@PMalinauskasMP It’s worth adding The Big Switch by Saul Griffith to your “to read” list, he’s a fair bit more eloquent than I am with this stuff!
@scottbobberry@PMalinauskasMP Big battery has been a huge success, paid for itself in under 2 yrs. We’ve got 4 now in SA which can supply full power for 4 hours or half power for 8. Makes no sense to burn 10-15 years and billions of dollars on a nuclear plant when we’re already so close to 100% renewables.
@scottbobberry@PMalinauskasMP Battery tech is still rapidly improving, by the time a nuclear power station is built it will already be obsolete. We would still need to dig up the uranium which is more expensive than wind and sun.
@scottbobberry@PMalinauskasMP Any number of solution, different “batteries” be it hydro, a hot water system that heats siring off peak, home wall batteries, large scale batteries, and as electric cars continue to gain traction there is huge potential in vehicle to grid technology.
@scottbobberry@PMalinauskasMP We’ve also got heaps of sun, wind and land - makes no sense to go down the nuclear route here given the renewable superpower advantages we have. I’ve got no problem with nuclear, just doesn’t make financial sense here.
@Julian_OBrien Jerry Dennard sold me a pair of Nikes from Rowe and Jarman sports store when I was a kid and he was playing for the 36ers. I guess some players had other jobs in the 90s.
