@MTBlack2567 I'd recommend The Wild Hunt of Hagworthy by Penelope Lively and The Wind Eye by Robert Westall as well as Susan Cooper's 'The Dark Is Rising' quintet and the various Alan Garner ones. They're all slightly dated but no less charming.
@MTBlack2567 Nope. Mostly because I find it boring and detracts from the story and roleplaying. I handwave most things one is supposed to keep track of: encumbrance, rations, arrows, XP, levelling up, spell use. Nothing against those who like that part of the game though. Play it your way.
@newbiedm@MTBlack2567 I GM 2 groups. One is by-the-book linear, has no interest in sandbox, lives for combat, hates roleplaying. The other is player-focused, roleplay-heavy, almost no combat. Different strokes... I immerse myself in both, attempting to entertain my players depending on what they want.
@MTBlack2567 Maybe not powers per se but sudden drops in temperature, rattling of door handles or other objects, sounds of footsteps/crying/nursery rhymes, etc. are all descriptive associations.
