@mattyglesias There was fraud (fake mortgage transfer documents created after the fact, lying to buyers about mortgage terms, etc), and it was handled with kid gloves by prosecutors. But it was somewhat tangential to the financial meltdown aspect of the crisis.
@patdennis It's fine to be like, ok let's do studies and be better next time. But it became a synecdoche for government failure because of the political press. It's normal for all sorts of organizations to make mistakes when doing new things, then fix them

@xwanyex Liberals want to live in a free society. They therefore have no problem with individuals breaking social norms (that's what it means to live in a free society) and support legal and political norms related to democracy, individual rights, etc. Hope this helps
