"Helping people to collaborate is a wonderful thing. Giving them time to think is even better." (Economist 2016)
Proponent of #DeepWork amid #CollaborativeWork
This week I had the pleasure to attend #ECIS2022 in Timisoara to discuss our perspective on the meaning and value of #IndividualWork. We presented our conceptual model to describe how individual and collaborative work shape each other. The whole story: https://t.co/iz58tdRZQc
This is an insightful compilation of research about the cons of #CollaborativeWork and the pros of #IndividualWork. Both are needed, but rhythm and balance are essential but at the same time moving targets. Thanks @stoweboyd for this #foodforthought.

Toward a Working Equilibrium: A Time for Silence
So much about work depends on the pace of alternating between noise and silence.

Projects 2021 #2: "Interplay between Individual and Collaborative Work" @LVM_Muenster. We explore how employees chose to #WFH and #WFO against the complementarity of individual and collaborative work. Needed footing: What is the role of individual work for employees? #hybridwork
"Klösterliche Einzelarbeit" im Homeoffice, "Inspiration und Kommunikation" im Büro. Das war schon vor COVID-19 der Fall, aber "jetzt kann es bloß keiner mehr bestreiten." @sbalzter via @faznet Jetzt muss der passende Rhythmus diskutiert werden, individuell und im Team #hybridwork
Gensler US Workplace Study 2020 shows that employees spent more time doing focus work instead of collaborative work. Is this a trend towards the "right" balance post-pandemic or do we need to refuel collaboration? I opt for more emphasis on focus work when desinging #HybridWork
https://t.co/c4Bwx9kpcn “[Focus and collaboration] vary by the hour throughout the day, and the mix can be different each day of the week. Hybrid models with workdays assigned as being entirely [...] collaboration or focus do not support the normal cycle [...] to get work done.”
Last Februrary two of our Smarter Work Members successfully defended their PhDs. Jana Mattern presented her framework to better understand and research "extensive connectivity to work". Joschka Hüllmann (@johuellm) made a compelling case for the use of digital traces. Well done!
Simon Lansmann and Joschka Hüllmann are preparing the upcoming development workshop of our ERCIS Competence Center Smarter Work.
Let us hope that their good mood persists until then!

Today, it was finally our turn to be presented on the instagram page of the department of information systems at @WiwiWWU & @ercisorg.

For spontaneous people: Tomorrow, 22.12, I am allowed to present the results of our #workingfromhome diary study at @WiwiWWU in the #LunchtimeSeminar series from @ercisorg. Grab some food and tune in. For Zoom details drop me a message.
Upcoming Tuesday, at 12pm!
Simon Lansmann (@simonlans) will give a talk on working from home due to COVID-19.
Does it increase perceived stress due to blurring boundaries between work and private life? 😟
Or is it not that bad after all? 🙂

At the onset of the #COVID19 pandemic, we conducted a diary study at @WiwiWWU. We examined #stress, #detachment and #communication_overload and draw positive conclusions. First results published in the 'Münster Practice and Policy' #MPP series: https://t.co/UMMImpP33x (in German)
Looking forward to share our insights, among others, about #MSTeams usage at @Hiltigroup and @LVM_Muenster. How will these new ways of collaboration shape #workingfromhome and #workingfromoffice? Where and how does individual focus work fit in? We address these questions.
The “mere urgency” effect is that people do urgent (near deadline) work first, even if it isn’t important. Important but non-urgent work doesn’t get done. This small study shows blocking 2 hours a day for important work increases happiness & productivity. https://t.co/RnvFIJ0bTT
A day full of interesting discussions ahead in Berlin at the Weizenbaum Symposium about "The Future of Work and Innovation in a Networked Society" @JWI_Berlin#weizenbauminstitut
Looking forward to present my paper about collaborative overload titled "How much Collaboration? Balancing the Needs for Collaborative and Uninterrupted Work" at #ECIS2018 hosted by @portsmouthuni
To make room for deep work, schedule one untouchable day each week. No meetings or phone calls unless they're both urgent and important.
