🚨 @MazzucatoM on Channel 4:
“Brexit was one of the biggest economic tragedies for this country… sold on lies by Farage and Boris Johnson.”
Brexit reduced our market size, damaged business investment expectations, and left us with weaker growth.
Ten years on, the refusal to hold those responsible to account is striking.
I cannot answer this thread directly because @danielmgmoylan blocked me a long time ago for exposing his nonsense.
Ireland & Cyprus are EU members, but not Schengen members. Is @BritainUnbound really suggesting UK citizens will get a "better experience" than ("when we were members") the Irish & Cypriots today?
Of course it is more ridiculous nonsense. They have unlimited time FoM rights (as we did when EU members) so no queueing up requirement to - passport stamp or EES - record their time in/out of the Schengen zone @LizWebsterSBF . They *and all returning Schengen country citizens* are accelerated straight through any Schengen outer border
You don't need evidence; it defies all simple logic to say there has been no economic harm. The UK chose to resurrect the highest of barriers to trade, prosperity & growth against its neighbours without (not in UK's gift to) removing either of these against & into any other market.
Even then it'd need to be at least as big, as consumer wealthy & as close as the EU... The highest of barriers are (proving market standards & compliance through approved certification or physical examination) regulatory & (accurately legally declaring each & every different commodity & proving its origin if wanting tariff free) customs borders,
between different legally regulated & customs territories. The UK under Lord Cockfield & Thatcher worked so hard to make this miracle of a vastly extended, continental, *internal* market happen. Her purported biggest acolytes are the ones now most determined to wholly trash her greatest successful legacy. Instead, UK's *internal* market is now smaller than the UK itself
Remember that, when it was still in the EU, Britain supported & voted for the introduction of this EU Entry/Exit System (EES). The then (Tory) govt wanted more checks on non-EU visitors entering the EU
@implausibleblog I will never forget that awful smirk as she announced the loss of FoM within the EU. She then went on to grant millions of visas to people from the RoW. Taking back control 🤔
2019: Conservative Home Secretary Priti Patel celebrated the ending of free movement of people with the EU
2026: The Independent, "Arrive three hours early for flights to beat post-Brexit visa queues, Britons warned"
Your reminder that on On Nov 30th 2017, when the UK was still in the EU, the UK government (as part of the EU Council, where it still had a seat and vote on legislation) voted to adopt Regulation (EU) 2017/2226, which established the EU Entry/Exit System (EES)
This is a biometric border system requiring the collection of fingerprints and facial images from non-EU (“third-country”) nationals entering the Schengen Area
In 2017,
👉Theresa May was Prime Minister
👉Amber Rudd was Home Secretary and responsible for overall Home Office policy
👉Brandon Lewis was Immigration Minister responsible for immigration policy under the Home Office
👉Sir Tim Barrow, as UK Permanent Representative to the EU, cast the UK vote in the Council based on instructions agreed by the UK Government
The Conservative government voted for Brits post Brexit to queue for longer 🤷♂️
