Metallica's song "One" is the third and final single from the 1988 album …And Justice for All. It was written primarily by James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich. It is one of the band's most powerful and dark songs, considered an anti-war anthem.
The story it tells is inspired by the novel "Johnny Got His Gun" (1939) written by Dalton Trumbo and its 1971 film adaptation. The plot follows an American soldier from World War I named Joe Bonham. During combat, a mine (or a shell in the novel) explodes near him, leaving him severely injured: he loses both arms, both legs, his jaw, his eyes, his ears, and the ability to speak. He is left completely paralyzed and without his external senses, but his mind remains conscious and lucid, trapped inside his own body as if in an eternal prison. He tries to communicate by banging his head in Morse code, begging to be allowed to die, but the doctors keep him alive.
Hetfield conceived the original idea years earlier, during the Master of Puppets era, thinking about what it would be like to be alive but unable to move, see, hear, or communicate. His manager recommended the book and the movie to them, which fit perfectly with that vision. The lyrics follow the soldier’s perspective as he begs God to end his suffering.
The music video, released in 1989, was Metallica’s first to receive heavy rotation on MTV. It is in black and white and alternates between footage of the band performing and scenes from the movie Johnny Got His Gun. Metallica had to purchase the full rights to the film because every broadcast of the video generated royalties.
Musically, it begins with a clean, atmospheric riff that conveys isolation and anguish, before exploding into heavy thrash metal with a very iconic guitar solo by Kirk Hammett and a machine-gun-like accelerated finale. It is one of the band’s most iconic live songs and won a Grammy in 1990.

On this day in 1980, Iron Maiden released “Sanctuary.”
Issued in the UK as their second single, the track was originally a non-album release and did not appear on the original UK version of Iron Maiden’s debut album. It was later included on the North American release of Iron Maiden, and added to the album in more territories during later reissues.
In 1990, “Sanctuary” was reissued as part of The First Ten Years series, paired with the band’s debut single, “Running Free.”
