Is the Afghan culture compatible with British values?

I’m speaking about this because a 12-year-old girl in Nuneaton was taken from a playground and subjected to a horrific sexual assault. A child. In a place that should have been safe. That is why I’m speaking.

The only reason the monster was identified is because he used a payment card issued to him to buy her a drink afterwards. That is the reality of what has just happened in this Britain.

Between 2012 and 2014 I spent two years in Afghanistan working for the European Union as a hostile environment close protection officer. I worked predominantly in Kabul, but I also travelled from Kandahar all over to Helmand Province. I didn’t learn about that country from headlines. I lived and worked there. What I saw stays with you.

I saw women excluded from public life. I saw girls denied education. I worked on projects addressing domestic abuse and sexual violence against women and children, and the resistance to even naming those harms was extreme. Many women had been conditioned to believe abuse was normal. That doesn’t evaporate just because someone crosses a border.

That’s why I’m blunt about values. In Britain, women are equal under the law. Girls are children. We have a legal and moral framework that treats women and children as full human beings. Those principles are not optional.

When people come to Britain, those standards apply. Any ideology or practice that excuses harm to women or children should be confronted, not accommodated.

British values are simple.
Women are equal.
Children are protected.
The law applies to everyone
