@PictureSporting Brearley, Knott, Hendrick & Parker never played again for England. Boycott never again in England, Larkins had to wait almost 10 years to play another home Test, Gooch & Emburey 4 years. Lots of good stories about a Test overlooked as not quite as exciting as rest of 81 series.
@PictureSporting Oft overlooked is that Botham bowled 89 overs in the first 4 days, taking 10 wickets, partly because other bowlers had broken down. He prevented Aus acceleration, 4th evening declaration & helped save the game
@Theleaguemag Loved that team, thought we were going to win the tournament! For those who thought Brooking and Keegan would be a big difference on 1982, this is evidence to the contrary as England could not beat Belgium or Italy
@CricketOGs What gets forgotten is his Herculean bowling in the final Test at the Oval. England attack had been reduced by injuries & without Botham bowling a huge number of economic overs in Aus 2nd innings & taking wickets, Australia would declared earlier & probably won.
Given how competitive an England Lions 4 day game v South Africa A should be with chance to watch high quality cricket, I wonder whether a more central location than Arundel would have been better. @ECB_cricket
@Theleaguemag Really nice bloke too. He used to have Saturday coffee in same place I did. Always happy to talk cricket & chatted to my little nephew too. Think he played football vs Pele & cricket vs Sobers!
