@ElaineMcgreevy As an adult on the spectrum, a parent of SEN children and a former educator I wanted to comment but knew I would be meet with the sea of I’ll informed defensive people in the comments! It was a disgusting read
@HelenMHayes1 I may have refined this skills with age @HelenMHayes1, I try to remember “is it helpful and will they be hurt?” Although sometimes people get hurt, but they still need to hear it! I’m try to be honest but kind
This #AutismAcceptanceweek I thought I would share some of my strengths as I have often been described in terms of my deficits, especially as a child! - attention to details and pattern recognition, I see things that other people may miss - hyper focus, I can spend hrs focused
Hyperlexia, I sound very smart on paper 🤣 and I find wonder in the world were other adults often don’t! #positiveaboutmydifferances#positiveaboutyours I think my ability to be a good SW is intrinsically linked to my ASD
- accepting of other’s differences, I am not a judgemental person and will try to understand differences - I usually don’t except social constructs as the given “norm” allowing me to challenge oppression - Integrity, I am honest (this can annoy other people) -
@EmilioLees@HelenATSLT As an autistic adult I approve! My first day of my MA they got us to stand in a circle and the panic set in! It’s not just the masking for me it’s the fact it’s not expected and I can plan it! They are the worst
@FluctuatingCrit@nancyspear3@autcareandshare No it’s not offended me, I’m genuinely interested why people still use the term! We say high support needs for my son, rather than using ‘low functioning’ as we to find that phrase problematic for many reasons
@FluctuatingCrit@nancyspear3@autcareandshare May I ask what do you feel those merits are? In my home it is a reminder that I would have survived and my non verbal son would have been murdered, so we do find it very difficult to separate it from it origin
