We welcome @simple_works as ASBP members. These structural engineers tasks themselves to be a force for good - for people and the environment - favouring timber and low embodied carbon construction.
...and then a good article that might change minds about the use of stone in buildings by @WebbYates, a lovely profile of Laura and Sinead at @simple_works (mentioning our @sekfordesession), plus an important reiteratation from @i_firth of the steel box girder story. Superb!
Sunday a.m. breakfast reading: The Structural Engineer @IStructE.
Nice to read this interview with @SineadConneely1 & @laurahannigan_ of @simple_works. Not easy to break away from great opportunities on large projects to go it alone to form your own path. But can be v. rewarding!
Check out our paper in @IStructE's The Structural Engineer this month! It looks at existing tried and tested low carbon building materials and how they can be substituted for traditional construction techniques. Drop us a line for more info or a link to the paper.
Vibro-stone columns, timber piles and hempcrete walls - great low-carbon design inspiration in #TheStructuralEngineer this month, courtesy of Phil and Johnny at @simple_works!

Sinéad did a great job of combining pedaling and talking sense for 30 straight minutes earlier! Get in touch with @SineadConneely1 if you want to talk about making London safer for cyclists!
Thank you @SineadConneely1@TobyFox92307507@Davidntaylor for another brilliant "In the peloton with...", exploring the @bikelinesldn initiative 🚴
Let's get more people on bikes! 👊
If you weren't able to join us, we'll post the full recording online next week.
1/5: It’s #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek and we’ve been reminded of this shocking overview of mental health on construction sites by @guardiannews in 2019 (link in bio). Construction is the deadliest profession, attributable to death by suicide, with >1 worker death per day.
4/5: Please remember, if you're struggling with any of these issues help is out there. Whether it's through the @samaritans or through @MatesInMind, the UK construction industries charity, getting help can be as simple as telling someone that you are not feeling your best today.
In the Saddle with @stuartwilks: To Haslemere and (almost) back...
Read Stuart’s latest blog, taking us behind the scenes of a
@KnightFrank#CycletoMIPIM training ride and discussing the work of @simple__works and @scale_rule with @SineadConneely1

Phil and our good friend Dan are featured in the @IStructE this week with their paper about the future of engineering education, proposing novel ways to measure the creativity and intuition of potential future engineers
Really enjoyed Matthew Gilbert and @shepherdpg's talk on optimisation at the @IStructE last night. Refreshing to hear an optimisation talk grounded in reality and the practicality of implementation on projects. Looking forward to trying out the new plug-in! @build_opt
Yes please!! Once it's also accompanied by a deconstruction and end of life strategy. We aim to include the timber alternative on all our schemes - from small to large
@dezeen One idea raised at our meeting last night was to have a #woodfirst planning policy, whereby all new buildings would have to use timber for structure - unless it could be demonstrated why this wasn't possible/viable... @MayorofLondon? #dezeenchat
#tbt to our submission for the @networkrail Footbridge Design Competition with Liam Ashford. A woven glulam truss, prefab offsite, light enough to be lifted in place in one go. Designed for deconstruction at end of life #timber#offsite#modular#deconstruction Render: L Ashford
Phil was talking in Bath today for the final year Architectural Structures course - covering the history of structural engineering through the key protagonists. A good opportunity to show our respect to legends of the industry. @UniofBath@BathArchandCivE#structuralengineering
